'Having Diabetes Doesn't Have to Define Your Life'
John Cruse, director of Environmental Services, Maryview Medical Center, strives daily to support his team and lead by example. That includes sharing his own struggles with diabetes.
"Anything I can do to help someone, that's our responsibility as people to look out for others," he said. "I try to promote wellness with my staff." Cruse doesn't push, but encourages and inspires team members to take responsibility for their health, much as he did two years ago. Read the rest of John Cruse's story here.

Blood Shortages Are Critical --- You Can Help!
Even as we faced a nationwide blood shortage, Hurricane Matthew blew through the Southeast, escalating the needs even further. Some hospitals have had to cancel elective surgeries due to the crisis.
You can help by giving blood. A bloodmobile will be at Rappahannock General Hospital Nov. 3. A blood drive will be held at the Windsor business offices on Nov. 21.

You can find other donation opportunities by calling 800-733-2767, visiting www.redcrossblood.org or downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor app.
John Bowe, director, System Benefits and Employee Well-being for Bon Secours Health System, said he became more proactive about blood donation after hearing a podcast about pediatric cancer patients and their incredible need for donor blood to successfully battle their disease. He schedules appointments to donate at his local American Red Cross donation center using their app.
"I know precisely when I am eligible to donate and can schedule with just a few taps on my phone. You not only earn points on BonSecoursBeYourBest.com for donating, but more importantly, you are rewarded with knowing that a very small investment of your time can have a profound impact on someone else's life. Giving back to others is a really important aspect of maintaining and improving your own well-being."

Join us from 7-8:30 on Nov. 9 at DePaul Medical Center in the large conference room in the old cancer center.

50-year Smoker Quits with Help of Smoking Cessation Coaching
Emily Higgins is proof that it is never too late to stop smoking.
Higgins, who works in occupational medicine billing for Bon Secours Hampton Roads, is 64 now, and was a smoker since age 14. "I'm the last person on earth --- a three-pack-a-day smoker --- that anyone expected to quit." She can vividly recall standing outside under an umbrella in a sleet storm to smoke a cigarette.
Higgins completed Bon Secours' Smoking Cessation Program twice, most recently in spring 2015, and used smoking cessation aid Chantix off and on for years "to not smoke as much as I wanted to," she says.
On July 29, 2016, "the lightbulb went off." Higgins had been visiting her son in Pennsylvania, where smoking was forbidden in his apartment, so she was trekking outside for every cigarette. "I thought about all the things we had talked about in the program. I took out my book and set my quit date. The help I found through the program brought me to the decision. Without it, I never would have succeeded. I want to say 'thank you'!"

Question: "What's a quick way to kill some stress at my desk?"
Answer: Just breathe.
No seriously ... do you know that without realizing it, a lot of us only use the top 20 percent of our lungs to breathe?
Instead, focus on full breaths all throughout the day. Oxygen is one of the most important nutrients in the human body. You can go weeks without food and days without water, but only a few precious minutes without oxygen, so don't deprive the body!
Deep-breathing techniques are extremely effective in handling depression, anxiety and stress-related disorders. Try it!
Additionally, we've partnered with the Cleveland Clinic to offer Stress Free Now. Sign up on BonSecoursBeYourBest.com.
