HRA Funds Help One Employee Invest in Her Own Health and Lose 28 Pounds
Gloria Wilson decided to use her Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) to pay for a life-changing weight loss program.
Wilson, an anesthesia technician at DePaul Medical Center, has been earning the Bon Secours Wellness Incentives the last couple of years. Funds from those Incentives, worth $300 each, had accumulated in her HRA. She used that money to pay for a program that she could not otherwise have afforded.
Since October, Wilson has lost 28 pounds and her physician says if she keeps going she'll likely be able to stop taking some of her medications for blood pressure and cholesterol.
Wilson, who has been at DePaul for more than three decades, said she has struggled with her weight for years.
"The most important thing is the way I eat now. That has really helped me a lot," she said. She has cut back on carbohydrates and sugar and walks regularly.
Wilson said she's thrilled with the results.
"Before, some days when I would get home from work, I would go straight to bed. I used to be a person who drank three or four Pepsis a day. Now I drink water all day long," she said. "I feel a lot better. I have a lot more energy. I sleep better at night."
