Religious leaders, Mayor Garcetti come together to help end homelessness in Los Angeles

Building up STEAM in Rancho Santa Margarita: New center opens at St. John's School
Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce helps cut the ribbon on Sept. 12 to open the new Johnson STEAM Center at St. John's School, Rancho Santa Margarita, along with Michael Pratt, head of school, and Dick Johnson, representing his family, major donors for the building project. The Rev. Dr. Dan Heischman, National Association of Episcopal Schools executive director, and St. John's School chair Celia Coulter were among the speakers. Rancho Santa Margarita Mayor Tony Beall, members of the city Chamber of Commerce, local dignitaries, and representatives attended the event. The new center is built of modular units, and includes a technology center, robotics lab and space for projects that will follow the STEAM model for integrating science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.
'Versed' returns for special fall session with bishop coadjutor candidates
Versed, the Bible discussion program for young adults, returns Oct. 11 with "Imagining the Kingdom." The Program Group on Youth & Young Adult Ministry invites all adult members of the diocesan community to take part in these special sessions, which will be led by the candidates for bishop coadjutor. Participants will "imagine the feeling of peace on earth, God's physical presence--the overwhelming sight of the heavenly host in worship," as they eat, learn and reflect on the Kingdom to become well "versed" in scripture and faith. Dinner will be served at each session, followed by sessions with the coadjutor candidates and smal-grounp discussion. All sessions will take place on Tuesdays, Oct. 11 - Nov. 15, 7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul. Youth delegates needed for Diocesan Convention Each year, Diocesan Convention provides seat, voice, and vote to one youth delegate from each of the 10 deaneries of the Diocese of Los Angeles. A delegate from each deanery is also needed. The convention offers young people a unique opportunity to address the diocese's current issues and to advocate for the needs of their peers. Annual Bishop's Guild Garden Party is Sept. 24
The Bishop's Guild, which provides support for seminarians from the Diocese of Los Angeles, will hold its annual Garden Party fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2 - 4 p.m., at the Pasadena home of Bishop Jon Bruno and Mary Bruno. It's a great time to gather in the Bruno's beautiful garden to meet the bishops and seminarians from the diocese - our future clergy leaders. Delicious food will be served and beautiful hand-made quilts will be available for show and sale. Tickets are $35 per person, to be purchased at the door. The Rev. A. Gillett Bechtel March 23, 1921 - September 9, 2016 The Rev. A. Gillett Bechtel, retired rector of St. Francis' Church, San Bernardino, died Sept. 9. He was 95, and had been living in Yucaipa. Survivors include his sons, Peter and Paul, and two daughters, Karen and Susan. Bechtel's wife, Betty Harpster Bechtel, died in 2013 after 67 years of marriage.The family held a private memorial for Fr. Bechtel on Sept. 20; a second service with interment of ashes will take place at Sea Ranch in Sonoma County, where the Bechtels lived in retirement. Fr. Bechtel served at St. Francis' Church as vicar from 1974 to 1976, then continued as rector until 1985. In retirement he served at Shepherd by the Sea Lutheran/Episcopal Church, Gualala, from 1987 to 2012. Read more here.

 'Harvest of Hope' at St. Aidan's will raise funds for charity
All are invited to St. Aidan's Church, Malibu, for its 10th annual festival and fundraiser, "Harvest of Hope," on Sunday, Oct. 2, 3 - 6 p.m. Raise a glass to help charities that include the Malibu Community Labor Exchange, School on Wheels, and the Malibu Task Force on Homelessness and Standing on Stone (SOS). Pair a tasty beverage of choice with delectable treats, both savory and sweet, while browsing the Country Store for homemade goods and treats ranging from embroidered tea towels and soaps to jellies and Fall pumpkins and produce. A silent auction will feature an exciting array of items, such as travel packages, restaurant certificates, designer clothes, gift baskets, and wine and beer baskets. Francis Bridger to offer lectures on Anglicanism
The Very Rev. Francis Bridger, dean of the Diocese of Brechin, Scotland, and former professor of Anglican Studies at Fuller Seminary, will give a series of three lectures on "The Future of Anglicanism" on Monday, Sept. 19, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at First Congregational Church of Pasadena, 464 E. Walnut Street, Pasadena 91101. The lectures, presented by Fuller Seminary, are open to all at no charge. Lecture topics are:
- Lecture 1: When Cultures Clash: The Challenge of Anglican Identity
- Lecture 2: And How Shall We Decide? Authority and the Discernment of Truth
- Lecture 3: The Fork in The Road: Is Anglican Unity Possible? (with panel discussion)

Bridger has worked for many years to build and repair relationships between Anglican churches in various parts of the world. Wednesday evening programs in Beverly Hills will explore paths to reconciliation The Ministry of Reconciliation will be the topic of a six-week Wednesday evening series of programs at All Saints' Episcopal Church, Beverly Hills, beginning Sept. 28. Participants at the sessions will look at people society often deems 'the other' and how, by getting to know them, one may learn to love "the other." Topics will include:
- Religious Diversity: Trends in Southern California, with Richard Flory, USC Center for Religion and Civic Culture
- Understanding Muslims in our Neighborhood: Islam 101, with Jihad Turk, president, Bayan Claremont
- Getting to Know the Transgender Community, with an interactive panel of transgendered persons assembled by Equality California
- Getting to Know People Who Are Homeless, with a panel of deacons and diaconal candidates of the Episcopal Church
- Getting to Know People Who Are in Prison, with Franky Carillo, exonerated after 20 years in prison
- Prophecy and Prophets: a look at 'the other' informed by Biblical prophets, with the Rev. John Goldingay, Professor of Old Testament at Fuller Seminary.

Financial planning assistance program to begin at St. John's, Rancho Santa Margarita Financial Peace University at St. John's Church, Rancho Santa Margarita - a system for bringing the peace of Christ into people's financial lives, which so often cause stress - begins on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Bishop's Room. Facilitated by Elizabeth Adams, the course, which runs weekly through Nov. 10, teaches "baby steps" for creating a budget, getting out of debt, and making a practical financial plan. Artist and scholar He Qi to give presentation on Chinese Christian art He Qi, artist-in-residence at Claremont School of Theology and an art scholar with an international reputation, will give a presentation on Chinese Christian art history on Oct. 1, covering art ranging from the Tang and Yuan dynasties to today's contemporary works. The event, sponsored by the Li Tim-Oi Center, will be held at the Church of Our Saviour in San Gabriel, beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at 11:30 a.m. Free will donations for the artist will be collected at the event; his books and artwork will also be available for purchase. Health Legacy Fair for clergy and lay leaders slated in La Verne Clergy and lay leaders of the diocese are invited to a Health Legacy Fair at St. John's Church, La Verne, on Thursday, October 27, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Some of the topics to be discussed and taken back to congregations include:
- Congregants' need to know viable options for their future healthcare and whole life planning.
- Respect for each person's spirituality, which requires open discussion and proper decision-making about quality of life.
- The sacredness of life as a whole, which requires tender compassion and ultimate care for every human being.
- Whole life care within one's holy existence.
- Providing advanced healthcare planning today for everyone's healthy wellbeing tomorrow.

'Inner Healing' seminar planned for Oct. 8 The Rev. Mike Flynn, former rector of St. Jude's Church, Burbank, will lead "Learning to Do Inner Healing," a seminar on Saturday, Oct. 8, 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Vineyard Community Church, 1320 Flynn Road, Camarillo. The program will cover topics including:
