Diocesan seal Regional forums set with coadjutor candidates
All are invited to sessions
planned for Oct. 7 - 9

Four regional forums with the soon-to-be-named candidates for bishop coadjutor of the Diocese of Los Angeles have been scheduled by the search committee to provide opportunities to meet and confer with prospective nominees.

All in the diocese are welcome to attend the sessions, and to view the Saturday-morning plenary via webcast. The format will include break-out sessions with individual candidates following a plenary session at each site. The schedule is as follows:
  • Orange County: Friday, October 7, 6 - 9 p.m., St. George's Episcopal Church, 23802 Avenida de la Carlota, Laguna Hills;
  • Los Angeles County: Saturday, October 8, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., Campbell Hall Episcopal School, Laurel Canyon Blvd., North Hollywood, with webcast of plenary session via the diocesan website, www.ladiocese.org;
  • Ventura County: Saturday, October 8, 3 - 6 p.m., St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 3290 Loma Vista Road, Ventura;
  • Inland Empire: Sunday, October 9, 1 - 4 p.m., Trinity Episcopal Church, 419 S. 4th Street, Redlands.
The forums will occur in advance of Diocesan Convention's Dec. 2 - 3 election of the bishop coadjutor, who, following the receipt of necessary consents from the dioceses and bishops of the wider Episcopal Church, will succeed Bishop Diocesan J. Jon Bruno upon his retirement. The search committee plans to announce the candidates in early September.

Holiday observance at the Cathedral Center
Diocesan offices at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5 in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Most offices will re-open on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Francis Bridger Francis Bridger to offer
lectures on Anglicanism

The Very Rev. Francis Bridger, dean of the Diocese of Brechin, Scotland, and former professor of Anglican Studies at Fuller Seminary, will give a series of three lectures on "The Future of Anglicanism" on Thursday, Sept. 22, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at First Congregational Church of Pasadena, 464 E. Walnut Street, Pasadena 91101. The lectures, presented by Fuller Seminary, are open to all at no charge. Lecture topics are:
  • Lecture 1: When Cultures Clash: The Challenge of Anglican Identity
  • Lecture 2: And How Shall We Decide? Authority and the Discernment of Truth
  • Lecture 3: The Fork in The Road: Is Anglican Unity Possible? (with panel discussion)
Bridger (pictured) also will offer an introductory lecture with conversation on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 7 - 8 p.m. in the parish hall at St. Edmund's Episcopal Church, 1175 San Gabriel Blvd., San Marino. Bridger has worked for many years to build and repair relationships between Anglican churches in various parts of the world. His special relationship with the church in the African nation of Burundi was the subject of a 2007 article in The Episcopal News (a PDF is here). He also worked with Justin Welby, now Archbishop of Canterbury, to help build the Continuing Indaba Project in the Anglican Communion.

Prism logo Magazines and paperback books needed for prison ministry
Prism, the diocese's restorative justice ministry, which provides chaplains for Los Angeles County jails and hospitals, is in need of magazines for distribution in the jails. Preferred magazines include Christian Century, Sojourners, Time, National Geographic, The Atlantic, Smithsonian, Oprah, Parents, Self, Glamor and Allure. Paperback books are also welcome, specifically those from important spiritual writers and theologians such as Thomas Merton, Joan Chittister, Brian McLaren, Richard Rohr, Rob Bell, Matthew Fox, Cynthia Bourgeault, etc. Any books on the mystics are needed, along with Practicing the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence, and books on domestic violence, addiction and recovery, and contemplative practice. Prism especially needs copies of God Believes in Love, by Bishop Gene Robinson, and God and the Gay Christian, by Matthew Vines. All books must be in paperback format. 'Into Silence' Contemplative Retreat

The Community of Divine Love, an Episcopal monastery in the Diocese of Los Angeles, will offer "Into Silence," a guided contemplative retreat, at Mt. Calvary Monastery in Santa Barbara. It will be led by Brother Dennis Gibbs and Sister Greta Ronningen of CD, both of whom are chaplains to the incarcerated of the Los Angeles County jail system, as well as writers, retreat leaders and spiritual directors. Cost for the retreat is $400 per person for four days and three nights, including accommodations and meals. Space is limited to 15 participants.

     Part of #Concert Across America, a nationwide effort to raise awareness about violence, specifically gun violence. The service, which will include a liturgy for victims of gun violence and a performance of Francis Poulenc's "Priez pour paix" ("Pray for Peace") by mezzo soprano soloist Christen Herman, will be recorded and distributed on the Cathedral's Facebook and Twitter accounts on Sept. 25 mark the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. Members of the ProCathedral congregation also have mounted a banner reading "Thou Shalt Not Kill - Control Guns NOW" on the front of the church.

Profectus Chamber Choir is a professional choral ensemble that specializes in choral music dating from medieval times through the present day. Pilgrimage to the Holy Land
September 22 - October 6, 2016
Led by the Rev. Heather Mueller, priest-in-charge at St. Andrew's Church, Taft, Calif., the Rev. Mark Stanger, canon precentor and missionary to the Holy Land from the Diocese of California; and Canon Iyad Qumri. The pilgrimage will include visits to important places in the Land of the Holy One, including Bethlehem, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, Jerusalem, Jericho and others. Pilgrimage to Israel/Palestine
January 19 - 31, 2017
Join members of St. John Chrysostom in Rancho Santa Margarita on its fifth pilgrimage to holy sites in Israel and Palestine, Jan. 19 - 31, 2017. Led by Canon Iyad Qumri, pilgrims will see the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Garden of Gethsemane, Western Wall, and other holy sites around Jerusalem; the Church of the Nativity and Shepherds' Field in Bethlehem; Jericho, the Mount of Temptation, and Herodium; the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, Sepphoris, and other sites. They will also also get a rich feel for contemporary Israeli-Palestinian issues from special evening speakers. Pilgrimage to Ireland
June 12 - 23, 2017 
There is something incredibly powerful about traveling the paths of Irish saints (and some sinners) as one travels around the island containing both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. This pilgrimage will explore the varieties of Christianities - Celtic, Roman and Anglican; the inspiration for Joyce, Yeats, Shaw, Beckett and Wilde; the piety of Patrick, Brigid and Aidan; the vision that produced the Titanic and her sister ships. Join Bishop Mary Glasspool and Canon Jim Newman in this pilgrimage of prayer, discovery, and wonder in the sights, the sounds, the smells and the tastes of the Emerald Isle. The trip will depart from Los Angeles and New York on Monday, June 12, 2017, and return on Friday, June 23 - a twelve-day tour. The cost from Los Angeles is $3,899. WESTCHESTER (LOS ANGELES): Music Director, The Welsh Choir of Southern California. Founded in 1997, the choir is a mixed SATB group of varied ethnic backgrounds, dedicated to the glories of the Welsh choral tradition, with a core group of experienced amateurs. Requires a strong background in choral music and the ambition and ability to challenge the choir to excel; must be willing to explore traditional Welsh repertoire and contemporary Welsh choral music. About a third of the choir's repertoire is sung in Welsh, and the director will need to become familiar with Welsh pronunciation (instruction is provided). The choir rehearses for two hours on Sunday afternoons in Westchester from September through June, with occasional free Sundays, on occasions to be determined.  The choir aims at performing a minimum of one public concert in the fall and one in the spring (generally close to St. David's Day, March 1).
