Regional forums set with coadjutor candidates
All are invited to sessions planned for Oct. 7 - 9
Four regional forums with the soon-to-be-named candidates for bishop coadjutor of the Diocese of Los Angeles have been scheduled by the search committee to provide opportunities to meet and confer with prospective nominees.
All in the diocese are welcome to attend the sessions, and to view the Saturday-morning plenary via webcast. The format will include break-out sessions with individual candidates following a plenary session at each site. The schedule is as follows:
- Orange County: Friday, October 7, 6 - 9 p.m., St. George's Episcopal Church, 23802 Avenida de la Carlota, Laguna Hills;
- Los Angeles County: Saturday, October 8, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., Campbell Hall Episcopal School, Laurel Canyon Blvd., North Hollywood, with webcast of plenary session via the diocesan website, www.ladiocese.org;
- Ventura County: Saturday, October 8, 3 - 6 p.m., St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 3290 Loma Vista Road, Ventura;
- Inland Empire: Sunday, October 9, 1 - 4 p.m., Trinity Episcopal Church, 419 S. 4th Street, Redlands.
The forums will occur in advance of Diocesan Convention's Dec. 2 - 3 election of the bishop coadjutor, who, following the receipt of necessary consents from the dioceses and bishops of the wider Episcopal Church, will succeed Bishop Diocesan J. Jon Bruno upon his retirement. The search committee plans to announce the candidates in early September. Inquiries related to the forums may be directed to the Rev. Holiday observance at the Cathedral Center
Diocesan offices at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5 in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Most offices will re-open on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Francis Bridger to offer lectures on Anglicanism The Very Rev. Francis Bridger, dean of the Diocese of Brechin, Scotland, and former professor of Anglican Studies at Fuller Seminary, will give a series of three lectures on "The Future of Anglicanism" on Thursday, Sept. 22, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at First Congregational Church of Pasadena, 464 E. Walnut Street, Pasadena 91101. The lectures, presented by Fuller Seminary, are open to all at no charge. Lecture topics are:
- Lecture 1: When Cultures Clash: The Challenge of Anglican Identity
- Lecture 2: And How Shall We Decide? Authority and the Discernment of Truth
- Lecture 3: The Fork in The Road: Is Anglican Unity Possible? (with panel discussion)
Bridger (pictured) also will offer an introductory lecture with conversation on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 7 - 8 p.m. in the parish hall at St. Edmund's Episcopal Church, 1175 San Gabriel Blvd., San Marino. Bridger has worked for many years to build and repair relationships between Anglican churches in various parts of the world. His special relationship with the church in the African nation of Burundi was the subject of a 2007 article in The Episcopal News (a PDF is here). He also worked with Justin Welby, now Archbishop of Canterbury, to help build the Continuing Indaba Project in the Anglican Communion.
Magazines and paperback books needed for prison ministry Prism, the diocese's restorative justice ministry, which provides chaplains for Los Angeles County jails and hospitals, is in need of magazines for distribution in the jails. Preferred magazines include Christian Century, Sojourners, Time, National Geographic, The Atlantic, Smithsonian, Oprah, Parents, Self, Glamor and Allure. Paperback books are also welcome, specifically those from important spiritual writers and theologians such as Thomas Merton, Joan Chittister, Brian McLaren, Richard Rohr, Rob Bell, Matthew Fox, Cynthia Bourgeault, etc. Any books on the mystics are needed, along with Practicing the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence, and books on domestic violence, addiction and recovery, and contemplative practice. Prism especially needs copies of God Believes in Love, by Bishop Gene Robinson, and God and the Gay Christian, by Matthew Vines. All books must be in paperback format. 'Into Silence' Contemplative Retreat
Mt. Calvary Monastery 505 E Los Olivos Street, Santa Barbara 93105 Information: 626.703.4474 The Community of Divine Love, an Episcopal monastery in the Diocese of Los Angeles, will offer "Into Silence," a guided contemplative retreat, at Mt. Calvary Monastery in Santa Barbara. It will be led by Brother Dennis Gibbs and Sister Greta Ronningen of CD, both of whom are chaplains to the incarcerated of the Los Angeles County jail system, as well as writers, retreat leaders and spiritual directors. Cost for the retreat is $400 per person for four days and three nights, including accommodations and meals. Space is limited to 15 participants.

The service, which will include a liturgy for victims of gun violence and a performance of Francis Poulenc's "Priez pour paix" ("Pray for Peace") by mezzo soprano soloist Christen Herman, will be recorded and distributed on the Cathedral's Facebook and Twitter accounts on Sept. 25 mark the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. Members of the ProCathedral congregation also have mounted a banner reading "Thou Shalt Not Kill - Control Guns NOW" on the front of the church.
