ProCathedral to join 'Concert Across America,' raises banner against gun violence
The ProCathedral of St. John will hold a special concert mass at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25 as part of #Concert Across America, a nationwide effort to mark the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims and to raise awareness about violence, specifically gun violence.
The service, which will include a liturgy for victims of gun violence and a performance of Francis Poulenc's "Priez pour paix" ("Pray for Peace") by mezzo soprano soloist Christen Herman, will be recorded and distributed on the Cathedral's Facebook and Twitter accounts. Members of the procathedral congregation also have mounted a banner reading "Thou Shalt Not Kill - Control Guns NOW" on the front of the building, located at 514 West Adams Boulevard, Los Angeles 90017, visible from both Figueroa and Flower Streets.
"The cathedral's Social Witness Committee chose [the banner's] message to disarm the NRA's mantra of 'guns don't kill people, people kill people,'" said Mark Kowlewski, procathedral co-dean and rector."
"This is not an abstract action," added Dan Ade, who serves with Kowalewski as co-dean and rector. "Members of our congregation have lost loved ones and have been victims of gun violence. As an urban community of faith, we take our responsibility to our community seriously."
Episcopal Relief & Development responds to Gulf Coast floods Episcopal Relief & Development is in contact with diocesan leaders along the Gulf Coast who are coordinating flood response efforts after several days of heavy rainfall across the region. According to FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), the slow-moving storm brought 10 - 20 inches of rain to Louisiana and the surrounding states beginning Aug. 11, and flooding continues although the heaviest rain has moved on. Louisiana and Mississippi are both under a state of emergency, and the federal government issued a major disaster declaration for Louisiana.
At least 11 people have died. As of Aug. 15, more than 40,000 homes and businesses remained without power, and more than 10,000 homes were flooded. The National Weather Service predicted more flooding to come.
Episcopal Relief & Development's U.S. disaster team has been in close contact with dioceses in the region and is providing support for their local efforts. The immediate response will help provide basic necessities to those most in need.
Affected dioceses will then coordinate with Episcopal Relief & Development to meet needs in the coming months and years. Currently, the Episcopal dioceses of Louisiana and Western Louisiana, their churches and ministries are reaching out to those in need of assistance, assessing what needs to be done and serving as best they can.
"In a disaster like this, we work closely with local church leaders to assess what is truly needed," said Katie Mears, director of Episcopal Relief & Development's U.S. Disaster Program. "We have begun to provide resources needed to assist those most vulnerable." Donations to enable Episcopal Relief & Development's Disaster Program to respond to the current crisis and support emergency preparedness and long-term recovery efforts in the United States may be made online here.
