St. Wilfrid's to hold symposium on affordable housing
St. Wilfrid's Church, Huntington Beach, will present "Hope for the Homeless," a symposium on housing solutions Friday - Saturday, Aug. 12 - 13, featuring Saj Jivanjee, an architect with 40 years of experience designing and developing affordable housing. He has been part of a grassroots movement addressing housing in Portland, Oregon, which has reduced its rate of homelessness by more than 40% through a partnership of non-profits and city and state governments.
The symposium will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 12 with dinner and a presentation by Jivanjee at Baci Italian Restaurant, 18748 Beach Blvd, Huntington Beach. Cost per person is $95 for a five-course dinner showcasing Archer Wines. Proceeds will benefit Beach Cities Interfaith Services, in which St. Wilfrid's is an active participant.
The program will continue on Saturday, Aug. 13 with an all-day symposium, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., at St. Wilfrid's Church, 18631 Chapel Lane, Huntington Beach. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
The schedule will include discussions on: developing multiple approaches to housing the homeless; surfacing priorities and building consensus; developing implementation strategies; and defining roles resources and organization.
There is no cost for the Saturday event, but reservations are requested for planning purposes. For tickets for the Friday dinner and reservations for the Saturday symposium, call the church office at 714.962.3512.

Dodgers to welcome Padres, Episcopalians on Sept. 2 The deadline for reserving tickets for Episcopal Night 2016 at Dodger Stadium is fast approaching (Aug. 7 in most congregations). The game will be played on Friday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. by the Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. Fireworks will follow the game. GFS fall camp registration due Registration for the Sept. 9 - 11 Girls Friendly Society fall camp, "Chill - The Bonds of Sisterhood are Cool!" Loch Leven Camp is due by Saturday, Aug. 6. The camp will offer worship, prayer, swimming, hiking, games, campfire songs and barbecue food (including Friday evening dinner). Subsidies are available for camper fees, but GFS-LA encourage branches to do some fundraising to engage parish support for the girls to attend camp. Every branch must send a minimum of one leader. Celebrate summer at Holy Nativity, Westchester, open house To celebrate its Westchester community and the end of summer, Holy Nativity Church will host a "Pizza Palooza" and community open house, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27. Guests will be welcome to explore Holy Trinity's extensive garden, see the triptych and other artwork in its sanctuary, learn about its classes in yoga, cooking and contra dancing, and sample delicious homemade pizza baked in the outdor community cob oven. The event is free and open to all. Face painting and sidewalk art projects will be available for children. Guests are asked to bring a can or box or bag of food to support Food Pantry LAX, which serves the hungry of the local community. Registration is open for Stillpoint 'Spiritual Journey' classes Stillpoint: The Center for Christian Spirituality, will begin its Spiritual Journey classes on Saturday, Sept. 17 at locations in Santa Barbara, West Los Angeles, Pasadena, Claremont and Orange County. The Spiritual Journey is an eight-month program that supports participants in exploring their spiritual lives in a small group setting, deeply enriching their relationship with God/Spirit and helping them recognize the ways that God is present and working in their lives. A trained facilitator guides members in developing their skills in deep listening and personal discernment. The program, rooted in the Christian tradition, is open to people of all denominations and faiths who are seeking to go deeper in their spiritual walk. It consists of eight five-hour sessions that meet once a month. Sessions include practice in forms of prayer and contemplation, time for personal reflection, sharing in pairs and triads, experience-based learning, and group discussion of readings. The tuition of $400 includes all materials (except books) plus a non-refundable $25 application fee. For information and to register, click here.
