Flags at gravestones
On Memorial Day weekend, youth
to place flags at soldiers' graves
The Program Group on Youth & Young Adult Ministries, with St. John's Church, La Verne, will sponsor "Memorial Day Flags and Prayers" at Riverside National Cemetery on Saturday, May 28, the Saturday before Memorial Day, placing U.S. flags on the graves of those who died in combat and leading a prayer service at the Medal of Honor Memorial Site. Young people and others are invited to join in this memorial event, meeting at the Memorial Circle at 8 a.m. In cooperation with the group "A Flag for Every Hero," participants will place flags on as many graves as possible. The flags are provided, paid for by private donations. The memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. The meeting place is Riverside National Cemetery; take the Van Buren exit from the Interstate 215 freeway. The Memorial Circle is straight ahead from the entrance. To make a donation to be used to buy flags next year, send a check payable to St. John's Church, with "Flags" in the memo line, to St. John's Episcopal Church, 4745 Wheeler Avenue, La Verne 91750.

Summer schedule planned for publications
The Episcopal News Weekly bulletin insert and the Update will shift to a biweekly schedule between mid-June and the middle of August to allow for staff vacations and other projects. 

Memorial Day 
Diocesan offices at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul will be closed on Monday, May 30 in observance of Memorial Day. Most offices will reopen on May 31.

Grace Church, Glendora, re-establishes GFS branch
Grace Church, Glendora has re-activated its Girls Friendly Society (GFS) branch, led by Ashlyn Cherry (pictured at center right above). Grace Church hosted the GFS spring meeting and awards ceremony on May 14. Also pictured, at left, are GFS diocesan chaplain the Rev. George Okusi and the Rev. Susan Scranton, rector of Grace Church. GFS offers a program of fellowship, study and service for girls ages 5 to 21. It is a worldwide organization within the Anglican Communion, with branches located from England to Zambia, from Australia to the Dominican Republic. Credit Union annual meeting
Credit Union honors volunteers at annual meeting 
At the annual meeting of the Episcopal Community Federal Credit Union on May 19 at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, Dan Valdez, ECFCU chair, presented certificates of appreciation to volunteers in the credit union's VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) and TCE (Tax Counseling for the Elderly) programs. Issued by the Internal Revenue Service and Franchise Tax Board, the certificates were accompanied by letters praising volunteers for their "remarkable talents and skills." In 2016, the programs assisted 120 clients from communities throughout the Diocese of Los Angeles. The Brotherhood of St. Andrew at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Rialto, is spearheading a weekly food drive for the needy of the greater Rialto area. At left, the first can is being blessed by the Rev. Hunter Silides, assisting priest. The Brotherhood of St. Andrew is a ministry of prayer, study and service for men and boys in the Episcopal Church, with branches in congregations throughout the United States and in other nations. Butch Gamarra The Rev. Floyd "Butch" 
Naters Gamarra
The Rev. Floyd "Butch" Naters Gamarra, former multicultural minister for the Diocese of Los Angeles, died in his sleep at his Pasadena home early May 16 after a recent period of illness. Survivors include his four daughters, Gugui, Lizzie, Linda, and Katalina, and his son, Jonathan. Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce will preside at Requiem Eucharist set for 2 p.m. on Friday, June 3, at St. Mary's Church, 961 S. Mariposa Ave., in the Koreatown section of Los Angeles, the parish in which Gamarra assisted from 2007-2012. During these years he served a term on the denomination-wide Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, and also provided leadership in Province VIII as convener of ethnic ministries. Barbara Mudge The Rev. Canon Barbara Mudge
September 27, 1930 - May 24, 2016
The Rev. Canon Barbara Mudge, a former vicar of St. Francis' Church, Simi Valley (1986 - 1995), and most recently canonically resident in the Diocese of Oregon, died May 24 at age 86. She is survived by her sons, James Mudge and Steve Mudge, and her daughter Suzanne Mudge, and six grandchildren; her husband of 61 years, John Leonard Mudge, died in 2012.

Barbara Mudge also assisted from 1984 to 1986 at St. Mary's Church, Laguna Beach and was chaplain at South Coast Medical Center. During her tenure in Simi Valley, she was chair of the Simi Valley Interfaith Coalition for the Homeless and Needy and was president of the Southern California Ecumenical Council from 1994 to 1995. Bishop Fred Borsch named her a canon of the Cathedral Center of St. Paul in 1993. After moving to Oregon, Mudge was vicar of St. John by-the-Sea Church in Brandon from 1999 to 2006, serving as ecumenical coordinator for Province 8 from 2002 to 2004, and in several capacities for the Diocese of Oregon, including ecumenical officer and judge of the ecclesiastical trial court. She was chaplain to the board of Church Periodical Club from 1997 to 2003.

Barbara Duffield Covington was born Sept. 27,1930 in Laguna Beach and earned a bachelor's degree at Occidental College. She was a teacher for many years before entering seminary at Bloy House, the Episcopal Theological School at Claremont. Bishop Robert C. Rusack ordained her to the diaconate in 1982; Bishop George W. Barrett ordained her to the priesthood the following year.

Grub Club Seeds of Hope invites kids, youth and parents to 'Grub Club' summer day camp
This summer, Seeds of Hope, with Steve List, horticulture teacher at Sylmar High School, will turn its gardens into a playground, kitchen, and classroom for "Grub Club," a series of one-week summer day camp sessions. Each day of this 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. five-day program will feature exciting gardening lessons, cooking classes, hands-on projects and crafts, fun fitness and delicious, healthy, food. Camp is free, and intended for children, youth and parents. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided each day. Camp dates and locations are:

Assistance will be offered with housing, public benefits, family law, expungements, bankruptcy/consumer debt and other Issues. Open to all individuals and community members who need legal assistance, but lack the resources to hire an attorney. Bring any and all papers related to the case. Greta Ronningen Yoga retreat to offer relaxation, meditation, spiritual formation 
Sister Greta Ronningen of Community of Divine Love, San Gabriel, will offer a six-day Yoga Retreat August 2 - 7 at Mt. Calvary Monastery in Santa Barbara. The retreat is appropriate for level I - II students. There will be vigorous sessions as well as more gentle relaxing sessions. Breathing practices and meditation will be offered daily. There will be a guided hike and plenty of free time to read, go to the beach and enjoy Santa Barbara. Ronningen (pictured) has been practicing and teaching yoga for 40 years, and is a chaplain working with both men and women in Los Angeles County jails. She holds a master's degree in spiritual formation from Claremont School of Theology. She is a spiritual director and leads retreats on Christian mysticism, the beguines, and encountering divine love. The yoga retreat will be limited to 14 participants. The cost is $725, which includes five nights' accommodation, three meals a day, and the yoga program. The retreat arrival is Tuesday afternoon, 2 p.m. or later, and departure is after lunch on Sunday. A $150 non-refundable deposit is required to reserve a space.      An evening of music from four distinct voices within the Los Angeles community benefiting IRIS (Interfaith Refugee and Immigration Service), an organization that provides resettlement services here in LA to children and adults forcibly displaced from their homes around the world, including places like Central America and Syria. This crisis has been felt around the globe, but even in our own city we have a chance to help support our new neighbors who have been forced to start their lives over in an unfamiliar place. The mission of Interfaith Refugee and Immigration Service (IRIS) is to provide a gracious welcome as well as tangible tools and connections to help new arrivals achieve self-sufficiency in the United States. IRIS has several programs including: refugee resettlement, immigration legal services, refugee employment program, cultural orientation, food pantry program and an ESL/Civics program. Food trucks will be available at the event. Tickets are $10 each.

     The Trans Chorus of Los Angeles (TCLA) will perform in honor of LGBTQ Pride. The mission of TCLA is to fiercely empower transgender and gender non-conforming people to discover, develop, and use their voice to change the ecology - everywhere. TCLA Artistic Director Lindsey Deaton collaborated with the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles to give birth to this exciting new chorus, which has performed for the City of West Hollywood's Transgender Day of Remembrance, for U.S. Congressman Mike Honda (chair of the Transgender Equality Task Force), and are scheduled to sing for the City of Los Angeles's LGBT Heritage Month in June as well as at this year's L.A. Pride Mayor's Reception.

Pilgrimage to Ireland

There is something incredibly powerful about traveling the paths of Irish saints (and some sinners) as one travels around the island containing both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. This pilgrimage will explore the varieties of Christianities - Celtic, Roman and Anglican; the inspiration for Joyce, Yeats, Shaw, Beckett and Wilde; the piety of Patrick, Brigid and Aidan; the vision that produced the Titanic and her sister ships. OAK PARK: Organist (part time). The Church of the Epiphany seeks a part-time organist to assist in its music program, which is in the Anglican choral tradition. Working under the supervision of the director of music, the organist would initially be primarily responsible for accompanying the parish choir at two rehearsals and two services per month (including preludes and postludes), from September through May, on a schedule to be determined, plus occasional additional special services, such as Choral Evensong and Advent Lessons and Carols.  The organist would also substitute for the director of music as needed during the summer. The organist would play both the 2-manual E&GG Hook pipe organ and a 2-manual Roland digital organ.  Initial compensation would be $250 per rehearsal/service combination. Camp Stevens seeks garden equipment for volunteer program

Camp Stevens' farm and garden director, Diego Duran, plans to start a volunteer program, but needs some tools to get started. The camp is looking for donations of shovels, hoes, digging forks, broad forks, trowels, and wheelbarrows. Items can be used if they are still in good working condition.
