Committee reports on coadjutor
bishop search progress
The Bishop Coadjutor Search Committee on May 3 issued a report on the progress of its task of nominating candidates to stand for election as seventh bishop of Los Angeles.

The committee has reviewed 20 applications for the position and at its April meeting selected 10 to move on to the next stage, according to the Rev. Canon Julian Bull, search committee chair. One has since dropped out because she is a finalist in another diocese, so the committee is in the process of setting up and undertaking online interviews with nine of the original 20 applicants. That group of nine includes candidates from outside the state and outside the country as well as several from the Diocese of Los Angeles; it includes current members of the episcopate as well as priests.

The committee will conduct three hours of online interviews with each candidate during May before inviting a smaller group for interviews in person over the summer. They are also undertaking background checks on all nine candidates during this phase. Each candidate has been assigned a chaplain to hold him or her specifically in prayer and answer questions during the process.

The committee remains on schedule to present a list of three to six  finalists to the diocese this fall, in time to organize meet-and-greets with the candidates in October. Once the slate is announced, the search committee will follow a process similar to that created by the Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop (JNCPB) for last summer's election to allow a brief window for "nominations from the floor" or, more precisely, "nominations by petition." Full details regarding that process will be published in coming months.

The committee invites the ongoing prayers of the diocesan community for the candidates, the members of the search committee, and the diocese.

30-Hour Fast 2016
Youth serve the needy during 30-Hour Fast

For 30 hours over the weekend of April 29 - May 1, youth from Church of Our Saviour, San Gabriel; All Saints' Episcopal Church and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Oxnard; St. John's Church, La Verne; and St Ambrose's Church, Claremont, went without food in order to raise awareness about poverty, hunger, and food insecurity in local communities. During their fast, the students volunteered at St. Francis Center and the Midnight Mission in downtown Los Angeles. They asked friends, family and fellow parishioners to sponsor their fast, raising $1,000 to help fund the Midnight Mission, which has worked with people on Skid Row for more than 100 years. The young people concluded the fast with Eucharist at Church of Our Saviour, followed by dinner with their families.

With Bell Tower Rebuilding, All Saints Church Casts First Stone in Sanctuary Readiness Project
After 116 years standing beside Montecito's All Saints By-the-Sea Episcopal Church, the building's historic stone bell tower is coming down. In light of cracks and the lack of a foundation and internal support, the church chose to dismantle the tower before a sizable-enough earthquake could damage it - or worse. The stones will start coming down Monday and will be used to rebuild a more durable bell tower with a seismically secure core, said the Rev. Aimée Eyer-Delevett, the church's rector. Read more here.

L.A. Urban Pilgrimage group 2015
L.A. City Pilgrimage offers youth
opportunities for service, spiritual growth

Young people of the diocese are invited to join this year's L.A. City Pilgrimage, a week-long urban immersion program for high school students. It is a week of service in and around LA, but also a week of looking for God where God can be found. This experience encourages students to question who their neighbor is and how to make their neighbor a subject of engagement and community rather than an object of pity. Through listening those on the margins of society and witnessing first-hand the consequences of economic injustice, students grapple with how to love their neighbor and evaluate their Christian faith through the lens of Christ's ministry and work. Students will live in community, work with families at Las Familias del Pueblo, a family service center on Skid Row, meet with members of the Episcopal Urban Intern Project to learn about their year of service, and take part in many other activities. For more information, and to register, visit www.pgym.la/la-city-pilgrimage, or contact Chris Tumilty at 213.482.2040 or ctumilty@ladiocese.org.
