Youth Service Day
Seeds of Hope and Big Citizen Hub
team for youth service day

A group of young people, ranging in age from junior high to college, spent April 16 weeding and planting in Edendale Grove, next to the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, under the auspices of Los Angeles nonprofit Big Citizen Hub and Seeds of Hope, the food justice ministry of the Diocese of Los Angeles for Global Youth Service Day. Steve List (pictured above at back center), agriculture teacher at Sylmar High School, gave the students a brief lesson in planting techniques before they set out tomatoes, peppers, basil, strawberries and other plants in the labyrinth-shaped form created by Seeds of Hope. Some 600 young people worked in similar projects at 13 sites around Los Angeles County, including nine Seeds of Hope gardens, including those at All Saints' Church, Highland Park; St. Paul's Church, Pomona; St. Stephen's Church, Hollywood; Church of the Epiphany, East Los Angeles; and St. Philip's Church, South Los Angeles, in addition to ecumenical partners including a Baptist, a Roman Catholic and a nondenominational congregation. The projects will provide fresh, healthy produce for communities of need, while demonstrating the impact that youth can have on civic landscape and well-being.
