International human rights group to file petition protesting treatment of migrantsAn international group of Central American migrants, human rights organizations, immigration advocates and religious groups will gather at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, Los Angeles, on Thursday, April 14, at 9 a.m. to announce the filing of a petition before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, an adjudicatory body of the Organization of American States ("OAS"), charging that the United States and Mexico are engaged in systematic violations of the migrants' international human rights by targeting them under the two countries' "Frontera Sur" program, which is now resulting in more than 170,000 deportations annually to Central America. The Diocese of Los Angeles has been involved in this effort from its inception; two priests of the diocese, Tom Carey and Richard Estrada, plan to be present. All are invited. Youth Ministries launches new website The Program Group on Youth and Young Adult Ministries has launched a new website with news about events, educational and service opportunities and upcoming pilgrimages at http://www.pgym.la. Current featured events are the 30 Hour Fast in support of hunger ministries on April 29 - 30 at Church of Our Saviour, San Gabriel; the Pentecost Youth Eucharist, which will bring together youth from around the diocese to help in the development and implementation of a new creative Eucharist, on May 21 at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul; and the L.A. Youth Pilgrimage, in which young people spend a week in community in an urban immersion program of service and Christian formation, June 26 - July 1. The site also includes a new prayer list for youth, young adults and youth workers in the diocese.
Video documents recent Spanish- language ministry fair Clergy and lay leaders of Spanish-speaking congregations in the Diocese of Los Angeles gathered March 5 at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul for a Spanish-language ministry fair. Attendees took part in a number of plenary sessions, workshops and discussions on how best to minister to Latinos in their neighborhoods. Watch this video for more about the fair.

Amy-Jill Levine will discuss understandings of Scripture and the Middle East at Guibord Center event The Guibord Center will host "On Different Grounds: Jewish and Christian Biblical Understandings of the Middle East" on Saturday, May 14, 4 - 6 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal ProCathedral, 514 West Adams Boulevard, Los Angeles 90007, presented by Amy-Jill Levine (pictured). According to the announcement, "The divisions within and between Jewish and Christian communities in discussions about Israel and Palestine are based on more than contemporary political views; they are also grounded in select understandings of Scripture. How does biblical interpretation necessarily lead to conflicting views, and how might an historical approach to the Bible help advance collaborative work for peace in the Middle East?" Levine is University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies, E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies, and professor of Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School and College of Arts and Sciences. Stillpoint class for potential spiritual directors is June 9 - 11 Stillpoint: the Center for Christian Spirituality will hold a class on "Becoming a Spiritual Director" Thursday - Saturday, June 9 - 11 at Church of Our Saviour, 525 W. In the film, actor Ewan McGregor plays both Jesus and Satan. Following the screening, Ed Bacon, rector, and Garcia will continue their conversation, joined by LA Times film critic, Kenneth Turan and the producer of Last Days in the Desert, Julie Lynn, founder of Mockingbird Pictures. Kutter Callaway, a professor at Fuller Theological Seminary will speak about issues of culture and theology, and discuss provocative ideas, such as renouncing Second Amendment rights, should the church pulpit have a gun for safety, and other ways to reduce gun violence.
