Big Citizen Hub volunteers
Youth Service Day events to focus on
bringing fresh food to LA's communities

Some 600 young people from around Los Angeles will gather at 14 sites on April 16, Global Youth Service Day, to construct and plant gardens that will help provide fresh, healthy produce for communities of need, and to demonstrate the impact that youth can have on the landscape and well-being of the city.

The day's activities are being coordinated by the Los Angeles nonprofit organization Big Citizen Hub, along with the Diocese of Los Angeles' Seeds of Hope program. Many of the April 16 work sites will be Seeds of Hope projects at Episcopal churches and schools. The launch event will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Edendale Garden, a project of Seeds of Hope and the Congregation of St. Athanasius that is located next to the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles. The event will begin with a brief opening ceremony, followed by a work party at which participants will weed, plant and generally beautify the site. All are invited to wear work clothes and bring gardening tools (labeled with the owner's name).

According to Seeds of Hope, more than a million people in Los Angeles lack access to affordable and healthy produce. They expect the young peoples' efforts to provide thousands of pounds of produce for food banks serving those in need.

"Young people in Los Angeles are ready, willing and able to take on the world's most difficult challenges, yet they are vastly under-represented as active citizens, decision makers and problem solvers," according to a Big Citizen Hub-Seeds of Hope release. "On Global Youth Service Day, we celebrate the desire and commitment of our city's young people to make Los Angeles a better place."

For more information about the Youth Service Day events and additional work sites, contact Beth Bayouth of Big Citizen Hub at bbayouth@thebigcitizenhub.org or Payton Hĝegh of Seeds of Hope at pwhoegh@jubileeconsortium.org.
