A word to the Episcopal Church from the House of Bishops
[March 15, 2016] The House of Bishops of The Episcopal Church, meeting in retreat March 11 - 15 at Camp Allen in the Diocese of Texas, unanimously approved the following "Word To The Church."
A Word to the Church
Holy Week 2016
On Good Friday the ruling political forces of the day tortured and executed an innocent man. They sacrificed the weak and the blameless to protect their own status and power. On the third day Jesus was raised from the dead, revealing not only their injustice but also unmasking the lie that might makes right.
In a country still living under the shadow of the lynching tree, we are troubled by the violent forces being released by this season's political rhetoric. Americans are turning against their neighbors, particularly those on the margins of society. They seek to secure their own safety and security at the expense of others. There is legitimate reason to fear where this rhetoric and the actions arising from it might take us.
In this moment, we resemble God's children wandering in the wilderness. We, like they, are struggling to find our way. They turned from following God and worshiped a golden calf constructed from their own wealth. The current rhetoric is leading us to construct a modern false idol out of power and privilege. We reject the idolatrous notion that we can ensure the safety of some by sacrificing the hopes of others. No matter where we fall on the political spectrum, we must respect the dignity of every human being and we must seek the common good above all else.
We call for prayer for our country that a spirit of reconciliation will prevail and we will not betray our true selves.
Preventing gun violence: Task force has resources for congregations
The Gun Violence Prevention Task Force of the Diocese of Los Angeles is committed to educating, equipping and engaging parishes for sustained efforts to reduce gun deaths and injuries. On average, 92 people are killed by gun violence each day. Many of these tragedies are preventable. To assist congregations, the task force has created a resource folder with information on gun violence prevention that is relevant to all areas of parish life. The folder contains resources for worship, adult education, and children, familes and youth. The topics, which are wide-ranging, include information on gun suicide, mental illness and guns, safe storage of guns, and domestic abuse, with suggestions on how parishes can engage in prevention in these areas. In addition, learning to respond compassionately to gun violence that takes place in the congregation or larger community can help deal with feelings of fear, grief, and helplessness. Copies of the resource folder are available from Virginia Classick, task force co-chair, at vclassick@aol.com or 818.225.0410. The task force, which has been active for several years, now operates in cooperation with the Southwest California Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), as directed in a resolution adopted by the 120th annual meeting of Diocesan Convention in December 2015.

Musical setting of Christ's passion to be screened during Holy Week
Easter Mysteries, a musical retelling of Christ's death and resurrection from the perspective of his disciples and followers, will be screened in a number of Southland cities at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22 by Fathom Events. The music, libretto and lyrics are by Tony Award-winning Broadway producer John O'Boyle. Danny Goldstein is director of the motion picture, with musical arrangements and music direction by Milton Granger. According to O'Boyle, the film records a live production of the original stage play, a version of which was performed some 15 years ago at St. Margaret's Church in Annapolis, Maryland, during Bishop Mary Glasspool's tenure as rector. The cast consists of Broadway veterans who have performed in such hits as Les Misérables, Mary Poppins, Porgy and Bess and Phantom of The Opera. According to the Easter Mysteries website, "The story is a celebration that sheds a new light onto the biblical figures of Christ's story in human terms - ordinary people with hopes, dreams and fears, uncertain of what lies ahead." A trailer is here. Screenings will be held March 22 in Aliso Viejo, Apple Valley, Burbank, City of Industry, Covina, Irvine, Lancaster, Ontario, Orange, Oxnard, Rancho Mirage, Riverside and Thousand Oaks.
