An update from the Search Committee
The Search Committee for the next Bishop Coadjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles has received and is currently reviewing 20 applications for the position, according to the Rev. Canon Julian Bull, search committee chair. Thirty-seven clergy from all around the world were nominated, and 17 declined to apply. The committee is currently in discernment towards the goal of engaging about half the applicants in live interviews and full background checks. The committee's goal remains to publish a list of finalists this fall, who will then attend meet-and-greet gatherings in the diocese and whose names will be on the ballot at Diocesan Convention next December. Questions may be addressed to the Rev. Canon Julian Bull, Search Committee Chair, at bullj@campbellhall.org.

'Juntos en el Camino' Some 70 clergy and lay leaders of Spanish-speaking congregations in the Diocese of Los Angeles gathered March 5 at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul for a Spanish-language ministry fair, titled "Juntos en el Camino," or "People on the Way." Attendees took part in a number of plenary sessions, workshops and discussions on how best to minister to Latinos in their neighborhoods. Above: participants signal their approval of the fair. At left: The Rev. Jeffrey Clawson, priest-in-charge of St. Anselm's Church, Garden Grove, and the Rev. Lorenzo Lebrija of St. Athanasius' Church, L.A., prepare tote bags for fair-goers.

Scholars, partners honored at NYA event
At its annual scholarship dinner on March 4, Neighborhood Youth Association (NYA) celebrated the accomplishments of its students and honored its dedicated volunteers. Donors raised $40,000 to assist 24 scholars, continuing NYA's record of 100-percent college placement among graduating seniors for the past seven years. A matching grant from Bishop Jon Bruno will double all donor gifts up to $110,000 through June 1 in celebration of NYA's 110th year as an institution of the diocese. At top: Student masters of ceremonies Maria Diego and Daniel Juan present NYA's 2016 Community Partner Awards to Stuart Work, head of St. Matthew's School, and the Rev. Bruce Freeman, rector of St. Matthew's Church, Pacific Palisades in recognition of decades of generous support of and participation in NYA programs. Diego and Juan presented Volunteer Service Awards to Wendell Barner, president of NYA's board of trustees, and to Canon Robert Williams, managing trustee. Above left: Bishop Suffragan Mary Glasspool and retired fifth Bishop of Los Angeles Fred Borsch pause for a photo during the event's silent auction.
A walk for interfaith cooperation Members of the Diocese of Los Angeles took part in an interfaith walk along Wilshire Boulevard in L.A., with the theme "In the Path of the Prophet Abraham," sponsored by the Institute for Religious Tolerance, Peace and Justice, on March 6. At top: Members of the Islamic Center of Hawthorne join the march, which began at the Wilshire Boulevard Temple and continued to St. Basil's Roman Catholic Church, continued to Immanuel Presbyterian Church and concluded at the Islamic Center of Southern California (ICSC), with speakers and worship at each stop. Participating Episcopal Church members included Daniel Tamm, member of All Saints, Beverly Hills, and representative of Mayor Eric Garcetti, as well as Archdeacon Joanne Leslie, pictured above left with a member of ICSC; and Bishop Catherine Roskam, bishop-in-charge of St. James' in-the-City Church on Wilshire, pictured at left with Soraya Deen of the Muslim Women Speakers Movement.
