Via Crucis
Pilgrims to travel to
US - Mexico border March 19

"Called to the Wall," the fifth annual Lenten Via Crucis pilgrimage to the U.S. - Mexico border in support of immigrants, will take place this year on Saturday, March 19, the day before Palm Sunday.  The caravan will depart from the Cathedral Center in Echo Park by 8 a.m. and make three stops before arriving at the border for the final procession along the beach, ending with Eucharist at the wall between California and Mexico. The theme for this year is Uniendo Nuestras Familias, "Uniting Our Families," and the event will  focus especially on children, youth, and families.

A new addition this year is a Lenten supper and reflection the night before the pilgrimage, on Wednesday, March 16, 6:30 -- 8:30 at Church of the Epiphany, 2808 Altura Street, Los Angeles. Participants will be invited for fellowship, food and reflection on the book Land of Open Graves: Living and Dying on the Migrant Trail (University of California Press) by Jason de Leon. (It is not necessary to read the book to participate.)

Episcopal Chorale and Holland_s Arise Kampen Choir
Joint concert to feature Episcopal
Chorale, Dutch Arise Kampen choir
The Episcopal Chorale Society invites the diocesan community to a multi-cultural explosion of music as African-American and Dutch voices collaborate with Korean-American instrumental artistry. The chorale, under the direction of Canon Chas Cheatham, will perform with Netherlands-based Arise Kampen choir, directed by Wolfried Kaper. The two ensembles sang together in Holland and Germany in 2014 and will reunite May 6 in performance with the Korean Dream Orchestra, conducted by Director Daniel Suk. These gifted musicians will come together to produce an evening of music and worship at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 6 at Wilshire United Methodist Church 4350 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles 90005. Nominations open for 2016 Stevens Foundation awards
The Bishop W. Bertrand Stevens Foundation is accepting nominations for its 2016 Bishop Garver Clergy Awards and Youth & Young Adult Ministry Awards.  The deadline for nominations is April 15, and awards will be finalized by mid-May. Bishop Garver Clergy Awards, honoring the late Bishop Suffragan Oliver B. Garver Jr., are for the professional enhancement of clergy who have been ordained 10 or fewer years and are canonically resident in the Diocese of Los Angeles. Bishop Stevens Youth & Young Adult Ministry Awards fund endeavors that help clergy and other staff to become better ministers to youth; programs that strengthen the connection between youth and the church; and those that will strengthen ministries to and by young adults. Church of Our Saviour has announced a new monthly Sacred Texts reading group, in which participants will explore "the unique gifts and profound teachings in the holy scriptures of other faith traditions." On the first Wednesday of every month, beginning on May 4, the group will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. to read and discuss the Holy Books of major faiths including: the Holy Qur'an (Islam), the Bhagavad Gita (Hindu), the Four Noble Truths (Buddhism), Tao-Te Ching (Taoism), the Vedas and more. The group will be led by Gary Bradley, rector of Church of Our Saviour and Br. Dennis Gibbs and Sr. Greta Ronningen of Community of Divine Love monastery, and will meet at Our Saviour (Allen Hall), located at 535 West Roses Road., San Gabriel. Gary Hall Date has changed for Camp Stevens retreat with Gary Hall
The date for the retreat to be led by the Very Rev. Gary Hall at Camp Stevens near Julian, California, has been changed to April 8 - 9. The retreat is titled "Listening for God in Nature, Scripture, and the Human Community." Hall, who was most recently dean of Washington National Cathedral, will bring a selection of readings for reflection in four sessions, leaving time for outdoor explorations and other activities. Registration is $200 per person, which includes accommodations, meals, and all activities and programs. More information is here.

Stillpoint to offer orientation for aspiring spiritual directors
Stillpoint: The Center for Christian Spirituality, will offer a three-day orientation June 9 - 11 on the art of spiritual direction for those who believe they may have the gifts for this ministry. "If you delight in spiritual friendship and conversation, have a good ear to listen and hear others, and enjoy the spiritual journey, you may have the gifts to become a spiritual director or companion to others," says the Stillpoint announcement. "We will begin in prayer and silence, and enjoy a variety of practices that illuminate our own spirituality. You will be invited through gentle exercises using prayer, contemplation, memory, image, movement, journaling, and deep listening. You will learn about the ancient ministry of spiritual direction, how director/companions prepare for their work, and how they cultivate self care and ethical boundaries to sustain themselves. Seasoned spiritual directors from the Stillpoint faculty will assist the class in group and small group work." This introductory orientation serves as the prerequisite to Stillpoint's intensive spiritual director training program. Clergy and lay men and women, those in religious education, chaplains and hospice workers are also welcome. Location to be determined. Islamic Center Guibord Center event will 'decode' Islam for non-Muslims
The Guibord Center presents events that help open sacred spaces in Los Angeles and invite all to join with people of various spiritualities and traditions to enter into the prayer life and symbols of different faiths. On April 9, 2 - 4 p.m., the Guibord Center will return to the Islamic Center of Southern California for "Decoding Rituals and Symbols of Islam," an enlightening afternoon at the mosque where participants can ask all their questions and learn about Islam first-hand. The Program Group on Youth & Young Adult Ministry invites young adults (ages 21 - 31), clergy and lay, to explore the human nature of the Bible in "Versed," a four-week series of discussions led by Bishop Jon Bruno, Bishop Diane Jardine Bruce, and guest presenters on Tuesday evenings in Lent. Together they will eat dinner, listen, learn, and reflect on the presenter's teachings as they become well "versed" in the scriptures. Cost of $40 for the series (negotiable) covers dinner.      Theologian and educator the Rev. Matthew Fox speaking on  "Gifts of the Christian Mystics for Our Times." Fox is the author of more than 30 books, including Original Blessing and The Coming of the Cosmic Christ. An Episcopal priest and former Roman Catholic priest, Fox has been renewing the ancient tradition of "Creation Spirituality", which is feminist, prophetic and committed to eco, social, and gender justice. At 7 p.m. on Friday, March 11, he will speak and sign books; 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 12 he will facilitate a small-group workshop. Pilgrimage to Italy: 
Following in the Steps of St. Francis and St. Benedict 
April 16 - 29, 2016

Course on Partnership in Haiti
May 7 - 13, 2016
For social justice leaders, especially those interested in work in Haiti. The course has been developed by Centenary College of Louisiana and the Christian Leadership Center, with assistance from an Episcopal Church Volunteer in Mission, "to equip those seeking justice the ability to promote effective engagement and cooperation in their local and global communities." Pilgrimage to the Holy Land
