No Caltrans fly-over near
ProCathedral, opponents say

A 55-foot, $43-million Caltrans fly-over bridge must not be built just east of St. John's Pro-Cathedral, opponents told a Feb. 23 public hearing, citing adverse effects of noise, pollution, visual obstructions, and lack of a full environmental impact report. Representatives of Los Angeles City Council Members Gil Cedillo and Curren Price spoke against the project and submitted documentation registering opposition. Attorney Jack Rubens presented detailed points of opposition on behalf of St. John's ProCathedral, following remarks by Dean Mark Kowalewski and Co-Dean Dan Ade. Opposition was registered on behalf of Bishop Diocesan Jon Bruno, and the Rt. Rev. Catherine Roskam, bishop-in-charge of St. James', Los Angeles, also registered community opposition calling for more up-to-date, comprehensive transportation strategies. Some 10 St. John's parishioners joined residents and merchants in speaking against the project, and representatives of the Los Angeles Conservancy and the West Adams Historical Association also voiced opposition. Three speakers, one from the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, voiced support for the project. March 21 is the deadline for further written comment to be addressed to Mr. Garrett Damrath, chief environmental planner, Caltrans District 7, I-110 High-Occupancy Toll Lane Flyover Project, 100 S. Main Street, MS 16A, Los Angeles, CA 90012. More information is here.
