Chinese convocation meets at Cathedral Center
Bishop Diane Jardine Bruce, center front, hosted the Chinese convocation of Episcopal Asiamerica Ministries (EAM) for a Feb. 15-16 planning meeting at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul. The group stayed in the Cathedral Center's retreat center, enjoyed walks at Echo Park Lake across the street, and planned how to continue Episcopal Church ministries among Chinese Americans. Bishop Bruce, who has fluency in Mandarin and Cantonese, has been a prominent leader in Asian ministry in the Diocese of Los Angeles and the wider Episcopal Church and was instrumental in establishing the Li Tim Oi Center for Chinese ministries, based at Church of Our Saviour in San Gabriel.
Episcopal Community Federal Credit Union: a resource for diocese and community It's been in business since 1993, but most Episcopalians of the Diocese of Los Angeles don't realize that the Echo Park-based Episcopal Community Federal Credit Union exists - or that they are eligible to use its wide range of services.
"We're not just in Echo Park," says Urla Gomes, who served the credit union for many years as executive director and recently returned as interim director. "We have online banking, and are accessible through a network of ATMs and shared branches in the Co-op Shared Branch system" domestically and abroad.
"We have mobile phone transfer, bill pay and more services," she said. "Congregations can come to us for loans up to $49,999, currently at 5 percent interest."
The credit union is based at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, and its services are offered to all Episcopal Church members and those connected with ministries provided by the church.
In addition to providing banking services for Episcopalians, ECFCU invests in its community, as it has done since it was founded in the wake of civil disturbances following the Rodney King trial in 1992. Then-Bishop Frederick H. Borsch and diocesan leadership established the credit union as a resource for people who were unable to get loans and other assistance through the commercial banking system. The credit union has given loans to people starting businesses, or needing money for transportation in order to get to work. It also offers financial counseling, as well as tax preparation through its VITA program, open now through April 7.
In order to follow its motto, "Those who have, helping those who have not," ECFCU needs more Episcopalians to become members and take advantage of its services so that it will have capital to continue helping those who need its assistance.
For more information, visit www.efcula.org or contact the credit union at 213.482.2040 or ecfcu@earthlink.net.
Gun violence prevention task force takes part in ELCA youth conference
The Joint Gun Violence Prevention Task Force of the Diocese of Los Angeles and the local synod of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) staffed a resource table at the recent Youth Extravaganza in Garden Grove. This national 4-day conference brought together ELCA youth leaders and volunteers from throughout the country. The task force provided Information provided about the impact of gun violence on children and youth, including teen gun suicides and unintentional shootings, as well as how youth leaders can be engaged in the gun violence prevention movement within their congregations. According to task force co-chair Virginia Classick, the event provided an opportunity for many productive conversations, and people from around the country signed up to be kept informed of on-going opportunities for events and actions. "Gun owners and those from communities with high rates of gun ownership, were very responsive to how they were welcomed as important partners in this work," she said. Clergy and youth leaders who are interested in the materials that were available may contact Classick at vclassick@aol.com or 818.225.0410.

Jack Plimpton, leader of diocesan HIV/AIDS ministries, dies at 85
After more than 25 years of active diocesan ministry that included founding the Project New Hope affordable housing complexes for individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS, Canon Jack Plimpton died February 12 in hospice care in Los Angeles. He was 85 and had recently been hospitalized while suffering from congestive heart failure.
Memorial Eucharist is set for 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 17, at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Ave., Los Angeles. The Rev. Canon Anne Tumilty will be celebrant, and Bishop J. Jon Bruno will preach. A luncheon reception will follow in the Great Hall, with the concurrent Feast Day of St. Patrick providing celebratory ties to Plimpton's Irish-American heritage.
Plimpton began his work as coordinator of diocesan AIDS ministries by appointment of Bishop Frederick H. Borsch after a 1988 grant made funding available for this outreach that had begun in 1986 during the tenure of Bishop Suffragan Oliver B. Garver Jr. Plimpton's appointment came shortly after the death of his life partner, the Rev. Robert Kettlehack, who was at the time said to be the first Episcopal priest of the diocese to live openly with his HIV/AIDS diagnosis. For Plimpton's longstanding and dedicated service, he was named to the diocesan Order of Angels in 2007 by Bishop Bruno.
Plimpton brought to his diocesan post some 20 years experience as an administrator and educator in the Los Angeles Unified School District, mainly in the Division of Adult and Career Education, within which he served as principal of North Hollywood Community Adult School. Among other achievements was his work in founding the Los Angeles Performing Arts Academy, a project in which he enlisted advice and support of close friend and late actress Jean Stapleton.
A Chicago native, John Hamilton Plimpton was educated at the University of Chicago, earning a doctorate in education. He moved to Los Angeles in the 1960s with the encouragement of an aunt who lived locally.
Plimpton is survived by his sister, Jean Burger, of Washington state, by several nieces and nephews and their families, and by many friends. A longer obituary will be posted by The Episcopal News.
