Presiding Bishop Curry sets Episcopal Relief & Development Sunday Feb. 14
Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry has invited all Episcopalians to join in observing Episcopal Relief & Development Sunday on February 14, the first Sunday in Lent. "I urge all congregations to devote the first Sunday in Lent to reflecting on the life-giving work of Episcopal Relief & Development and giving meaningfully to support this vital ministry," Presiding Bishop Curry said. "As the season of Lent calls us to re-examine our priorities, let's unite in truly seeking and serving Christ in all persons, through the important work of Episcopal Relief & Development." Lent was designated by the 2009 General Convention of the Episcopal Church as a time for remembering Episcopal Relief & Development's work to heal a hurting world. Although the first Sunday in Lent is the official day of observance, congregations may hold a special service on any Sunday. Read more here.
House of Bishops theology committee announces new online daily meditations for Lent This Lent, the Theology Committee of The Episcopal Church's House of Bishops invites church members to examine unsustainable patterns of consumption and self-interest that have contributed to economic crisis. Repairing the Breach: Discipleship and Mission in a Global Economy, produced in partnership with Forward Movement, provides free daily meditations and videos, and covers topics ranging from employment and consumerism to food and the environment. Daily meditations move through a pattern of reading, watching, reflecting, and praying, and each week of Lent is devoted to a particular aspect of economic life. The theology committee of the House of Bishops "invites you to recover and renew your economic imagination this Lent, and to learn about specific practices where the Spirit of God is moving in local congregations and communities to bring new life." Click here to learn more and watch for the first meditation on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 10. A print-friendly PDF of the reflections is also available for download here.
Lent Madness to begin Feb. 11 Lent Madness 2016 will begin on Thursday, Feb. 11, the day after Ash Wednesday, with a matchup between Helena and Monnica. Now in its seventh year, Lent Madness, according to its website, "began in 2010 as the brainchild of the Rev. Tim Schenck. In seeking a fun, engaging way for people to learn about the men and women comprising the church's calendar of saints, Schenck came up with this unique Lenten devotion. Combining his love of sports with his passion for the lives of the saints, Lent Madness was born on his blog "Clergy Family Confidential" (now "Clergy Confidential"). The format is straightforward: 32 saints are placed into a tournament-like single elimination bracket. Each pairing remains open for a set period of time and people vote for their favorite saint. Sixteen saints make it to the Round of the Saintly 16; eight advance to the Round of the Elate Eight; four make it to the Faithful Four; two to the Championship; and the winner is awarded the coveted Golden Halo. First-round information consists of basic biographical information about each of the 32 saints. Things get a bit more interesting in the subsequent rounds as we offer quotes and quirks, explore legends, and even move into the area of saintly kitsch." For more information, visit the Lent Madness website here.

Seeds of Hope seeks donations for van to distribute food to hungry families
Seeds of Hope, the food justice ministry of the Diocese of Los Angeles, has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for purchase of a transport van. In the past year, working with partners such as Food Forward, Seeds of Hope has been able to accept thousands of pounds of produce gleaned from farmers' markets and backyard orchards. These fruits and vegetables, which would otherwise go to waste, are delivered to diocesan food banks to be distributed to hungry families. Having a van will drastically increase their capacity for accepting these types of produce donations. They will be able to rescue more produce and feed more hungry families. In fact, the added capacity of the van would allow Seeds of Hope to provide up to 100,000 families with a years servings of healthy fruits and vegetables. To make a tax-deductible contribution, click here.
Prince's Players of Woodland Hills to present "Sacrilege" The Prince's Players at Prince of Peace Church, Woodland Hills, will present the play "Sacrilege" by Diane Shaffer Jan. 29 - 31 and Feb. 4 - 6. She works with the addicts, prostitutes and hustlers on the streets of New York. She befriends Ramon, a homeless hustler, and restores his faith in himself, the Church and God. Sister Grace gains national notoriety challenging conservative Church doctrine - much to the dismay of her colleagues - forcing everyone to re-examine the meaning of faith and the redeeming grace of God. Dates and times are Feb. 4, 5, & 6 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Jan 31 at 7 p.m. There will be two matinees - Sunday, Jan. 31 and Saturday Feb. 6, at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4.
