All are invited to Martin Luther King commemorative service on Jan. 16 The diocese's annual Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration will be held at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16. Guest preacher will be the Rt. Rev. Wayne Smith, bishop of the Diocese of Missouri. He will share his story of the Michael Brown tragedy in Ferguson, which is located in his diocese. The Program Group on Black Ministry invites all to a reception following the service. George Wayne Smith became 10th bishop of the Diocese of Missouri in 2002. He served on former Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori's council of advice, is a member of the House of Bishops Theology Committee, and was cognate chair of the Standing Committee for Liturgy and Music at the 2015 General Convention.
ECW invites all women of the diocese to annual meeting Episcopal Church Women Los Angeles will hold its annual meeting on Saturday, January 30, 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles. All women who have been baptized, confirmed, or received into the Episcopal Church belong to the Episcopal Church Women, and are invited to this meeting. This year, the board of the ECW in the Diocese of Los Angeles is reinventing its purpose. "The ECW has always been a champion for women's issues in the church," and board members "feel it is time to reach further out into our community," with a shift in focus to support of social justice issues that affect the lives of women and children in Southland communities, according to an announcement from the board.
One of their new partnerships, and the focus of the conference, is A Window Between Worlds, a nonprofit organization dedicated to using art as a healing tool to empower and transform individuals and communities affected by violence and trauma. Cathy Salser, AWBW's founder (pictured), will speak about the work being done in the area and what ECW members and chapters can do in their own communities to promote and further their good works.
The conference agenda also includes a business meeting, keynote address, lunch and Eucharist, at which Bishop Suffragan Mary D. Glasspool will preside. Registration is $30. Childcare will be provided. For more information and to register online, click here.
Come to the red carpet for the Hollywood-themed Bishops' Ball High school-age young people of the Diocese of Los Angeles are invited to walk the red carpet to the annual Bishops' Ball on Saturday, Jan. 30, 7 - 10 p.m., at St. Michael & All Angels Church, Studio City. With the theme "Hooray for Hollywood," the event will offer dancing, games, movies, food and fun. High schoolers and their chaperones are invited to dress up for the theme; old Hollywood, new Hollywood, glitz and glamour will be welcome. Cost is $10 for each young person; chaperones are free. New legal tool can save lives from gun violence At its recent convention, the Diocese of Los Angeles passed a resolution calling for greater advocacy and action to prevent gun violence (text is here). As a first step in 2016, the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force of the diocese is working to raise awareness of a California law that went into effect on Jan. 1 that allows family members to obtain a firearm restraining order when a person is at risk of harming him or her self or others with a firearm. Canon Mary Leigh Blek, a member of the task force who lost a son to gun violence, has provided more information about the law and how to use it here. The Rev. Al Smith
January 6, 1934 - December 25, 2015
The Rev. Alfred "Al" Hersey Smith, former rector of St. Columba's Church, Camarillo, and more recently serving at St. Bartholomew's Church in Poway (Diocese of San Diego), died unexpectedly in his sleep on Christmas night. A funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. at St. Bartholomew's Church, located at 16275 Pomerado Road, Poway 92064. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a newly established fund in Smith's name at St. Bartholomew's Church. Messages to the family may be sent in the care of the church office.
The Rev. David Maurer d. Jan. 5 The Rev. David Stuart Maurer died on Jan. 5 as the result of a massive brain hemorrhage. He and his wife, the Rev. Karen Maurer, were co-vicars of St. Clare's Mission in Rancho Cucamonga; he previously served at St. Luke's Church, Fontana. Services are pending.

Wellesley Choir concert to benefit Neighborhood Youth Association
The Neighborhood Youth Association, an institution of the diocese for more than 100 years, will be the beneficiary of a concert presented by the Wellesley College Choir at All Saints' Church, Beverly Hills, on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. The choir, directed by Lisa Graham, represents its namesake college, a private liberal arts school for women established in Wellesley, Massachusetts, in 1875. NYA is a social service agency that works with at-risk young people to help them achieve their "personal best" through after-school tutoring and enrichment programs. The agency recently expanded from its original venues in the Venice area of Los Angeles to Watts; further expansions are planned. All Saints' Church is an NYA outreach partner. Almont will lead an afternoon workshop on the key factors of good leadership, in a conversational session that will include learning games and encourage participation. Lenten Quiet Day on Feb. 27 to feature Godly Play The annual Lenten Quiet Day for Deaneries 9 and 10 will be held at St. Michael & All Angels Church, Corona del Mar, on Saturday, Feb. 27, 12 noon to 4:30 p.m. All are welcome to "a day that promises to renew and deepen our engagement with the power of God's Word as we are reintroduced to our sacred stories through the wonder of Godly Play," an education program that teaches Christian precepts through story and play. The Rev. Martha Korienek will be the keynote speaker. Afternoon sessions will include time for meditative art making, labyrinth walking, quiet reading, and peaceful reflection, along with several Godly Play story sessions. The day will conclude with Eucharist, celebrated by Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce. Registration will open at 11:30 a.m. A simple lunch will be served at noon. Childcare is provided for children in kindergarten and younger; please register well before the event to ensure enough childcare workers are present. Suggested donation for lunch and expenses is $20. Tim Wise will explore 'White America's Blindspots' in conversation on racism Prominent anti-racism writer and educator Tim Wise will present "Racism, Privilege and Denial: Healing White America's Blindspots," a half-day teaching on Saturday, Jan. 30, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at All Saints Church, Pasadena. According to Wise, "Being well-intentioned, sympathetic, and understanding will not be enough to dismantle institutional and structural racism - each and every one of us must do our part.
