Diocesan resolution on gun violence prevention spurs action by task force
At the recent convention of the Diocese of Los Angeles, a resolution on gun violence prevention was passed overwhelmingly. The resolution called in part for individuals and congregations within the diocese to advocate with their Congress members for the implementation of universal background checks for any person seeking to a acquire a gun. HR 3411, the Fix Gun Checks Act of 2015, has been introduced by California Congresswoman Jackie Speier. "A number of representatives within the diocese have signed on as co-sponsors, and we want to thank them," says Virginia Classick of the diocese's Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, which met Dec. 15 by conference call with colleagues from the Southwest California Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to plan their joint work. "We also need to contact the offices of those representatives that are not yet co-sponsors, urging them to co-sponsor this crucial federal legislation. Please let your voice be heard by calling your representative's office." Co-sponsors are listed here. Any Congress member may be reached through the U.S. Capitol switchboard at 202.224.3121. A fact sheet on HR 3411 from a national gun violence prevention organization is available here. The Task Force invites anyone with a special interest in gun violence prevention to contact co-chairs Virginia Classick (818.225.0410 or [email protected]) or Patricia Terry ([email protected] or 310.783.0648).

Highland Park nonprofit takes the homelessness problem into its own hands
They began trickling into All Saints' Episcopal Church in Highland Park in the early evening, unfurling sleeping bags along the pews, beneath an abstract crucifix wrought from twisted metal. Elected leaders had been talking for months about the urgency to expand shelters before a much-anticipated El Nio brought wet and potentially deadly weather to the thousands of people sleeping in the streets. But city action and funding stalled, so volunteers teamed with Pastor W. Clarke Prescott to open the all-volunteer overnight sanctuary last week to people like Cynthia Mitchell, who said she spent the previous night under a blanket on a friend's porch. Read more here.
