 Michael Curry begins term as presiding bishop Michael Curry was installed as the 27th presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church at a joyful service on Nov. 1 in Washington National Cathedral. In his sermon, he told the congregation, "God has not given up on God's world." The Episcopal Church, he added, "has work to do." Video of the sermon is available from Episcopal News Service. A video of the full three-hour installation service is available online here. More about the service will appear in the Early Winter 2015 issue of The Episcopal News magazine, to be published in mid-November. Curry is slated to speak at the Diocese of Los Angeles' convention on Dec. 4.
Diocesan offices to close for Veterans Day holiday: Update will take week's hiatus
Diocesan offices at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day. Most offices will reopen on Thursday, Nov. 12. The Episcopal News Update will not be published on Nov. 11; publication will resume the following week, on Nov. 18.

Diocesan Convention will be held Friday - Saturday, Dec. 4 - 5 at the Ontario Convention Center.
A note to delegates and clergy from the Secretary of Convention:
On Dec. 1, the virtual convention booklet will be available to download to your iPad, tablet, or laptop. It will be a PDF file, so you should have Adobe Reader on your device. If you do not have Adobe Reader, download the free program here. There will be no Wi-Fi in the convention meeting room, so it's important to download the booklet before you get to Convention. bring your device with you - and remember to bring your charger to recharge it over night.

Those planning to attend the convention are encouraged to visit the page often for updated information, forms, candidate bios and photos, helpful documents and more.

The deadline for submitting candidate information for the convention booklet has passed; however, nominations may still be entered. Candidate information sent to the Episcopal News office will be posted on the website until the Nov. 23 deadline. Convention youth volunteer
training set for Nov. 20
The Program Group on Youth and Young Adult Ministries invites young people in high school (grades 9 - 12) to volunteer as workers at Diocesan Convention. The youth fulfill a number of essential roles, including security at the doors, staffing the microphones, distributing and collecting ballots, and generally keeping the meeting running. Pre-Convention meetings
A pre-convention meeting will be held for each deanery of the diocese for a preview of the proposed budget, resolutions and other matters to come before convention. One or more members of diocesan staff will be present at each meeting. All clergy and convention delegates are expected to attend, and any interested church member is welcome. Clergy publish new books
Several clergy who currently or recently served in the Diocese of Los Angeles have released new books in recent weeks.
The Rev. Canon Gary Commins' new book, If Only We Could See: Mystical Vision and Social Transformation, has been published by Cascade Books. Commins is rector of St. Luke's Church in Long Beach; he will begin serving as priest-in-charge of the Church of the Incarnation, Jersey City in the Diocese of Newark in February 2016.
Cascade Books has recently released The Radical Disciple: Three Pamphlets Inspired by Koinonia Partners, by the Rev. Bill Lane Doulos, deacon at Church of Our Saviour, San Gabriel, and longtime peace and justice activist.
The Rev. Fr. David B. Rude, former vicar of St. Clare of Assisi Church in Rancho Cucamonga (now closed) has recently published a small book of poems, ranging from the faithful to the funny, titled "Fatherlode." The book is available in h formats at Amazon. Rude is currently vicar of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Wantage, New Jersey.
Ashley Graham-Wilcox to conclude work at Camp Stevens Ashley Graham-Wilcox will leave her position as marketing and outreach manager at Camp Stevens on Dec. 31. She will continue to live at Camp Stevens with her husband, Trevor, camp associate director, and their son Jude. Graham-Wilcox will continue as a communications oficer for Episcopal Camps and Conference Centers (ECCC), the network of camps and retreat centers around the country, for which she has worked part-time since 2011.

 Fiesta Floats to provide float building opportunity for GFS members, friends Girls Friendly Society in Los Angeles invites girls ages 10 and up to take part in dry float decorating for the 2015 Rose Parade on Saturday, Nov. 21, 1 - 4 p.m. at Fiesta Parade Floats in irwindale. Dry decorating is the first stage of preparing the float. Girls may do such tasks as wash and sort items to be used on the float, cut dried flowers, crush coconut - and socialize. Participating girls must be in at least 4th grade, and will earn a GFS badge and credit for community service time. Sometimes there is time for a tour of the float warehouse. Self-defense will be topic of workshop in Long Beach St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, Long Beach, will host a free Personal Security & Safety Workshop on Sunday, Nov. 22, 12 nooon - 1:30 p.m. with representatives of Kung Fu, Tai Chi and other martial arts studios. The workshop, which will "empower and motivate" participants to take charge of their own safety, is recommended for 9th graders through adults and seniors. Adams Blvd., Los Angeles 90007 Information/Reservations here A series of dialogues based on the late-World War II diaries of Gitta Mallasz of Budapest, adapted and performed by Shelley Mitchell. For 17 months at the end of the war, Mallasz and her three Jewish friends experienced a series of remarkable visits by beings who described themselves as angels. Woven into their account of life under Nazi occupation are the psychologically provocative conversations they experienced with those beings. There is no charge for the performance (donations are gratefully accepted), but registrations are requested to help with planning.
