Convention youth volunteer

training set for Nov. 20

The Program Group on Youth and Young Adult Ministries invites young people in high school (grades 9 - 12) to volunteer as workers at Diocesan Convention. The youth fulfill a number of essential roles, including security at the doors, staffing the microphones, distributing and collecting ballots, and generally keeping the meeting running.
Generations of young people of the diocese have discovered the workings of the church by participating in the official youth presence at the annual meeting of Diocesan Convention. They meet bishops, clergy and lay leaders, work with young people from all over the diocese and learn how they can begin to take their own places in the wider church.

Young people who will take part in convention must attend a training meeting on Saturday, November 20, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles 90026. The training is mandatory for youth who are volunteering at convention. Transportation help is available for those living at a distance from the Cathedral Center.

A $75 charge for each youth volunteer helps to cover the cost of hotel rooms for Friday night and meals and snacks during the convention. Limited scholarship assistance is available. Youth volunteers will be supervised and chaperoned throughout the convention. For complete information, instructions, rules about expected behavior and attire, and registration forms, click here. Direct any questions to Chris Tumilty, diocesan youth ministry coordinator, at ctumilty@ladiocese.org or 213.482.2040, ext. 211.

All Saints' Church and Riverside Art Museum are sites for Ludmila Pawlowska icon exhibit
'Icons in Transformation," a free 120-work exhibit featuring the work of Russian-born abstract expressionist Ludmila Pawlowska, will make its premiere California at All Saints' Episcopal Church and the Riverside Art Museum. The exhibit opens to the public on Oct. 31 and continues through Jan. 15, 2016. Pawlowska's icon-inspired artworks feature classic icon elements, such as the depiction of eyes and use of metallic pigments and rich colors. But then the artist upends tradition with layered pigment and use of painting paste, found objects, masonry, precious and semiprecious metals, fossils, ceramic fragments, wood, glass, burlap and other media. The exhibit also features 15 traditional icons from the Vasilyevsky Monastery in Suzdal, Russia, and 12 large sculptural works that complement the exhibit. A schedule of related activities, including receptions, tours, speakers, music performances and other events, may be found on the All Saints website.

'Talking With Angels' performance slated at ProCathedral  The Guibord Center will present Talking with Angels: Budapest 1943, a series of dialogues based on the late-World War II diaries of Gitta Mallasz of Budapest, adapted and performed by Shelley Mitchell (pictured), on Saturday, Nov. 21, 7 - 9 p.m., at St. John's ProCathedral in Los Angeles. For 17 months at the end of the war, Mallasz and her three Jewish friends experienced a series of remarkable visits by beings who described themselves as angels. Woven into their account of life under Nazi occupation are the psychologically provocative conversations they experienced with those beings. This version of Talking With Angels was performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the summer of 2015. There is no charge for the performance (donations are gratefully accepted), but registrations are requested to help with planning: for information and registration, click here. The Guibord Center works in increase understanding among Los Angeles' diverse spiritual communities. St. John's Cathedral is located at 514 W. Adams Blvd., Los Angeles 90007.
