World's religions meet in Salt Lake City
The Parliament of the World's Religions gathered at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City Oct. 15 - 19 to engage in a joyous celebration of all faiths and serious dialogue about how faith can be put to work in the world. Above: Diocese of Los Angeles representatives include (from center left) Ravi Verma, Joanne O'Donnell, Bishop Mary Glasspool, Nathaniel Katz, Nancy Frausto, Saul Renteria, Frank Alton (off camera) and (center front) Elizabeth Rechter. Photographer was Kay Lindahl, member of the Parliament Ambassador Advisory Council, also of the L.A. diocese. For more about the Parliament, see the Early Winter issue of The Episcopal News magazine, due out in November.
Diocese set to mark Social Media Sunday
Joining the call to share social media posts on Oct. 25 (see related article below), three new communication initiatives are now underway within the diocese.
Adding Facebook friends
In an effort to advance from 2,845 to more than 3,000 followers by Advent, the diocesan Facebook page includes new invitations asking parishioners and clergy to share the page with their friends. This added capacity will assist diocesan communication work, including upcoming posts about the bishop coadjutor search process.
Media Guild forming
A new group of social media practitioners and print journalists is taking form within the Diocese of Los Angeles with the mission of sharing expertise while sharing good news. Anyone interested in joining the new guild is encouraged to email Bob Williams, diocesan canon for community relations, at media@ladiocese.org.
Updating News email list
This is the time of year when all congregations are reminded to update their email lists with The Episcopal News. In accordance with policy set by Diocesan Council, lists are used for no other purpose than distribution of The News and very occasional messages from the Bishop's Office. Lists, ideally in an Excel spreadsheet format, may be forwarded to News editor Janet Kawamoto at news@ladiocese.org. For further information, phone 213.482.2040, ext. 251.
Episcopalians invited to share in
'Social Media Sunday' Oct. 25
Started by an Episcopal Communicator, #SocialMediaSunday became a national event on June 29, 2014, primarily but not exclusively within Episcopal churches. (See Episcopal News Service's article, " Episcopal Social Media Sunday a digital invitation"). This year #SMS15 on October 25 is an ecumenical effort. All are welcome and encouraged to participate. You can find out more about it in the Social Media Sunday Facebook group or on Twitter.
The idea is elegantly simple. When you post on social media about books you've read, restaurants in which you've dined and movies or shows you've watched, you're letting your friends know something about yourself and what's important to you. If church is part of your life and important to you, why not post about that? Read more here.
Bishop's Guild event cancelled Due to extenuating circumstances, it has become necessary to cancel Saturday's Annual Bishop's Guild Garden Party, originally scheduled for October 24 at the Pasadena residence of Bishop Jon and Mary Bruno. It is still possible, however, to share in the longstanding mission of the Bishop's Guild, which is to assist in fundraising on behalf of seminarians of the diocese. Contributions to the Bishop's Guild, with checks payable to the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, may be mailed to the Cathedral Center, 840 Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles. Bishop Bruno thanks you for your understanding and asks your prayers at this time for Mary Bruno's beloved sister, Becky, who has entered hospice care. Bishop Bruno also thanks the Bishop's Guild members and officers for their ongoing dedicated service within the Diocese of Los Angeles.

The Washington Post October 15
The Episcopal Church's first black leader - and its 'tortuous' path toward integration Bishop Michael Curry vividly remembers growing up in segregated Buffalo in the 1950s and '60s, where on one bright morning in 1963, he crossed Main Street from East Buffalo to West Buffalo to attend an integrated school.
As an Episcopal priest and civil rights activist, his late father, Kenneth Curry, helped lead the boycott of the city's segregated public schools. And yet, like the larger culture at the time, worship in the Episcopal Church he so loved was largely segregated. As leader of a black congregation in Buffalo, he never would have been called to the pulpit of a white Episcopal church.
Five decades later, Kenneth Curry probably would never have imagined that his son would be chosen to lead the entire denomination.
On Nov. 1, Michael Curry - who was elected this summer just one week after the shootings at a historic African Methodist Episcopal church in Charleston, S.C. - will be installed as the first black presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church at Washington National Cathedral. He will replace Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, who was elected the church's first female presiding bishop in 2006.
