Help resettle a Syrian refugee family in Los Angeles Interfaith Refugee and Immigration Service (IRIS), a project of the Diocese of Los Angeles, recently received notice that it will be resettling its first Syrian refugee family as early as November. Unlike many refugees resettled by IRIS, the family, a pregnant mother and father and their two teenage boys, has no family or friends in the United States to help welcome them.
At a silent auction at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Oct. 10, Episcopalian and other concerned Angelenos contributed about $5,000 to resettle Syrian refugees in Los Angeles, funds that will be used to help pay for rent and obtain the necessities of life in Southern California.
IRIS invites others to make a tax deductible donation to support IRIS's resettlement work. Checks may be made payable to the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angles, with "IRIS" on the memo line, and sent to Interfaith Refugee & Immigration Service, 3621 Brunswick Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90039, or visit the IRIS website here and click the "Donate" button to make a secure credit card or PayPal contribution.
In addition, the store "Ten Thousand Villages" will contribute a percentage of their sales when consumers mention "auction for refugees" until Nov. 5. Visit the store at 567 South Lake Ave, Pasadena, CA, 91101 or online here. Be sure to mention "Auction for Refugees" at checkout.

Nancy Garni May 14, 1951 - October 9, 2015 Nancy Garni, longtime director of development at Hillsides, died Oct. 9 of cardiac arrest. She had been in remission after a two-year battle with leukemia that included a stem-cell transplant. She was 64.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Seltzer; her daughter, Katherine Farina; and a sister, Judy Garni. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 at St. Edmund's Episcopal Church, 1175 S. San Gabriel Blvd, San Marino 91107. A reception in St. Edmund's parish hall will follow the service.
A native of Whittier, California, Nancy Garni graduated from California High School in 1969, where she began her lifelong ministry by sending care packages to soldiers serving in Vietnam and volunteering at a nearby hospital. She graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a bachelor's degree in English literature in 1979, and became volunteer personnel director of Anaheim Memorial Hospital Medical Centers. She later worked for the Los Angeles chapter of the American Red Cross, where she became development director. In 1989, she became chief advancement officer for Hillsides, a diocesan institution that provides services for foster children and youth at its campus in Pasadena. During her 26-year tenure in that position, Garni oversaw four capital campaigns that raised more than $50 million to provide services and programs for Hillsides' clients. She also was a former member of the board of The Gooden School, an Episcopal academy in Sierra Madre.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to City of Hope or Hillsides, where memorial funds will be established in Garni's honor. She was especially fond of gardens, and a garden on the Hillsides campus will be created as a permanent memorial.

Seminar to study early Christian monasticism Brother Adam McCoy, OHC, will lead a three-day seminar titled "Monks Before Benedict: Early Christian Monasticism," exploring the tradition of early Christian monasticism before St. Benedict established his Rule. The seminar will be held at Mt. Calvary Monastery and Retreat Center Tuesday, Dec. 1 - Thursday, Dec. 3. Through the lives and writings of about seven monastic founders participants will look at monastic life in the East and in the West, in the desert and in the town. Each contributes a distinctive strand to a monastic tapestry that was already rich by the time Benedict wrote the Rule. Each session will begin with an exploration of character, history and culture, and then concentrate on brief selections from writings by and about these progenitors of the monastic movement. Each session will close with reflections on what relevance this type of monastic life might have today. The schedule will be:
- Tuesday evening: Introduction
- Wednesday morning: In Eastern Deserts: Antony of Egypt, Pachomius
- Wednesday afternoon: In Eastern Towns: Basil of Caesarea
- Wednesday evening: In Western Towns: Augustine of Hippo, Caesarius of Arles
- Thursday morning: In Western "Deserts": Martin of Tours, John Cassian
McCoy received his Ph.D. in 1973 in Anglo-Saxon literature, concentrating on monastic homiletics, at Cornell University. He joined the Order of the Holy Cross that year and has been a student of monastic history ever since. He is the author of Holy Cross: A Century of Anglican Monasticism (1987) and of an article on Anglican Monasticism in the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Christian Monasticism. Cost for the retreat is $340 per person, which includes all materials, a single room and meals. For information or to register, email to mtcalvary1@aol.com or call 805.682.4117. All Saints, Pasadena, to present an evening of 'spirituality and beauty' with Richard Hearns All Saints Church, Pasadena, will host an evening with artist Richard Hearns, born in Beirut and reared in Dublin, on Friday, October 30, 6 p.m. in Sweetland Hall. Hearns' paintings document a search for an idyll. Driven by a deep spiritual sensibility, his experiences and connections with separate locations and cultures are combined to form a triangular history. "I got to know Richard Hearns and his beautiful paintings during our journeys to the homeland of the Celtic poet-philosopher, John O'Donohue, on the Western Coast of Ireland, writes Ed Bacon, rector of All Saints, who will facilitate the conversation. "This 35-year old artist and athlete embodies that Celtic spirituality where God is seen and revealed in the beauty of nature. Just as the poet Mary Oliver defines prayer as paying careful attention to creation, Richard Hearns embodies that prayerful attention in his paintings. Now you get to see an exhibit of those paintings and join in a conversation we will have about spirituality and the creative process. We will also get to sample the delicious Thai cooking of Richard's wife, Boo. I hope you will join me for an evening of spirituality and beauty." For information, contact Debbie Daniels at ddaniels@allsaints-pas.org or 626.583.2750. All Saints Church is at 132 N. Euclid Avenue, Pasadena.
