Katharine Jefferts Schori Caring for the sojourner

A message from Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori
The children of Abraham have ever been reminded to care for the widow and orphan and the sojourner in their midst, who were the refugees and homeless of the time. Jesus charged his followers to care for the least of these and proclaim the near presence of the Reign of God - in other words, feed the hungry, water the thirsty, house the homeless, heal the sick, and liberate the captives. We cannot ignore the massive human suffering in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, nor in Asia and the Americas. We are our brothers' and sisters' keepers, and our lives are bound up with theirs. The churchwide ministry of Episcopalians has included refugee resettlement since the refugee crisis of World War II.  It continues today through the leadership of Episcopal Migration Ministries, and I urge your involvement, action, and support. Read about their work below, and share these opportunities with friends and co-workers. You will discover anew the power of good news in the face of the world's tragedies.

The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori
Presiding Bishop and Primate

Justin Baker Oct. 17 workshop will
guide congregations
in social media strategies

Social media strategist Justin Baker of Los Angeles will keynote a Saturday-morning workshop set for congregations of the diocese on Oct. 17, 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., at the Cathedral Center, 840 Echo Park Ave., Los Angeles. The workshop is co-sponsored by the diocesan Program Group on Communication and Bloy House, the Episcopal Theological School at Claremont.

Offered at no charge to participants, the program will open with a plenary presentation followed by two practicum sessions, one for beginners and another for advanced social media practitioners. Teams of two or more representatives from each congregation are encouraged to participate, with advance registration requested by email to [email protected]. Individuals are also welcome.

Titled "Social Media Strategies for Congregations," the workshop will instruct participants in best practices for integrating online media with a congregation's wider communication plan. Recommendations will include practical steps for integrating free advertising, video, blog posts, and other web-based resources for the upcoming Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent and Easter seasons.

Baker brings to the workshop helpful perspective as a certified social media professional (CSMP) and operator of his own public relations and media consulting firm. An independent filmmaker also experienced in network television, Baker also combines his media expertise with his background as a professional musician. His current projects include the documentary "American Chorister" featuring the Great Music program of St. James' Episcopal Church, Los Angeles. At present, Baker's firm works with public figures, authors, musicians, teachers, bloggers and corporate entities all "wanting to solidify their reach to the 21st-century audience."

The workshop will be co-hosted by diocesan communication staff members Bob Williams, Janet Kawamoto and Chris Tumilty. An additional offering for spring 2016 will be Bloy House's "Media in Ministry," a semester-long course offered on Saturday afternoons at the school's Claremont campus. Further information and registration details will be posted in Bloy House's upcoming spring schedule of classes.

Child refugees Back-to-school drive for transit passes for child refugees is successful
More than $1,700 in transit passes and bus tokens was raised for child refugees at a recent back-to-school drive in the Diocese of Los Angeles. The effort, which was coordinated by Archdeacon Joanne Leslie and the Program Group on Global Partnership, was part of a larger collection of back-to-school supplies initiated through various interfaith efforts. "We were extremely pleased at and grateful for the generosity and witness of our congregations," said Troy Elder, bishop's legate for global partnership. "Through our accompaero program, it had  become clear that transit passes were needed," he said, referring to the program group's ongoing work pairing refugee children with volunteer mentors. "And the results of this drive will help instill green transportation habits among these new members of our community." For further information about the accompaero program or other diocesan efforts related to the child refugee crisis, or to volunteer, contact Elder at [email protected].
