On 50th anniversary, remembering lives lost in Watts
Honoring the 50th anniversary of the Watts Revolt, the L.A. Council of Religious Leaders gathered for prayer Aug. 9 at 116th and Avalon Blvd. where violence erupted in 1965. The Council's president, Bishop Jon Bruno, offered a reflection, and Deacon Jamesetta Hammons read the names of the 34 persons who died in the seven-day uprising. Pastor Rashon Crutcher of El Bethel Missionary Baptist Church welcomed the assembly to the corner, site of his church home. Service leaders also included council members Rabbi Sarah Hronsky of Temple Beth Hillel; Evangelical Lutheran Church in American Southwest California Synod Bishop Guy Erwin; Board of Rabbis President Morley Feinstein; Dean John Bakas of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral; the Rev. Linda Culbertson, general presbyter of the Presbytery of the Pacific; and Pastor John Cager of Ward A.M.E. Church. LAPD was represented by Senior Lead Officer Angelo Stewart of the Southeast Division, pictured below greeting Hammons after the prayer service. All are welcome for the Watts Week culminating service Sunday, August 16, 4 p.m., at St. John's United Methodist Church, 1716 Santa Ana Blvd. N, near the Watts Towers.
Seminar on stewardship coming up on Aug. 29: additional registrants needed The last of this year's series of seminars on year-round stewardship is coming up on Saturday, Aug. 29, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles. Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce notes that a few more churches need to be represented to make the session viable; reservations are requested as soon as possible. Previous seminars have been enthusiastically received by participants. Members of the Program Group on Stewardship and experts in the field will lead participants through a discussion of year-round stewardship, with additional information on planned giving and capital campaigns. Bishop Bruce invites congregations to bring a small team to the session. Each team should bring a picnic lunch and snacks; beverages will be provided. For reservations, send the name and city of the team's congregation and the number of people planning to attend to Bruce at obispadjb@gmail.com.
Gooden Center invites all to join 'Ride 4 Recovery' The Gooden Center, an Episcopal Church-related substance abuse recovery ministry for men based in Pasadena, will hold its annual major fundraiser, the Richard Selje 2015 Ride 4 Recovery on Saturday, Oct. 24, beginning at 7 a.m. This bicycling event will offer Century (100 mile), Metric Century (62 mile) and newly introduced Quarter Century (25 mile) challenges. Riders (age 12 and up), supporters and donors are welcome. All proceeds will help fund scholarships for Gooden Center clients. The General Convention of the Episcopal Church, meeting June 25 - July 3 this year, adopted Resolution A159, which addressed the church's position on alcohol and drug addiction. The resolution called on dioceses to "collaborate with qualified community resources offering prevention and intervention, treatment and recovery." Since its founding 53 years ago, The Gooden Center in Pasadena has delivered treatment to more than 8,000 men and their families. The center's professional staff takes great pride in the quality of treatment it provides at a cost significantly lower than most, thanks in part to the cycling fundraiser and other donations. For this year's Ride 4 Recovery, the center has the support of the Pasadena Fire Department and the Pasadena Police Department. The ride will be based at Centennial Square of Pasadena City Hall, 100 Garfield Avenue. For more information and to register, visit the center's website here.

Online survey is next step in coadjutor search committee's listening process
The Bishop Coadjutor Search Committee of the Diocese of Los Angeles has created an online survey to continue the "listening process" that began earlier this summer with a series of meetings throughout the diocese. The survey - available in English and Spanish - asks six questions that also were asked at the listening sessions:- Describe gifts, talents, and best practices your parish/mission/ministry brings to the diocese.
- Describe issues, challenges, and struggles currently faced by your parish/mission/ministry.
- List questions members of your parish/mission/ministry ask (or have asked) of diocesan leadership.
- Describe gifts, talents, and best practices of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles.
- Describe issues, challenges, and struggles currently facing the diocese.
- List the qualities, characteristics, perspectives, and preferred experiences, sensitivities, talents, and skills you would like to see in the next bishop.
According to the Rev. Canon Julian Bull, chairman of the search committee, the survey is meant for those who were not able to attend a listening session. Comments made by those who did attend have already been noted, and do not need to be repeated, he said. To take the survey in English, click here; for Spanish, click here; or visit www.ladiocese.org and select the search committee link. The survey will remain available through the month of August.
