Watts Week 2015 seeks progress 50 years after 1965 civil unrest New investment in community youth and economic infrastructure is among top goals of a weeklong observance set for August 9-16 by the Los Angeles Council of Religious Leaders to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1965 Watts Revolt. Chaired by Bishop J. Jon Bruno, the council will host two events set to "bookend" the week's activities planned by various other civic, cultural and interreligious agencies - including the Los Angeles City Commission on Human Relations, which plans to host a regional conference August 15 at Charles Drew University. Registration information will soon be online at hrc.lacity.org. Working in partnership with the Watts Area Ministers, the Council invites the public to a prayer vigil at 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, at 116th Street and Avalon Boulevard, the intersection where the 1965 violence erupted in protest of arrests made by police. A brief commemorative liturgy will include blessing the corner with prayer, incense and holy water in memory of the 34 lives lost during the eight-day conflict that resulted in $40 million in property damage.
