Episcopalians rock Disney Hall
The acclaimed Walt Disney Concert Hall organ roared, purred, wept and rejoiced on June 12 under the hands of six highly accomplished organists who also serve congregations of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles. A brass ensemble and a 200-voice choir joined them for several numbers - and at one point the entire audience rose to sing the hymn "All creatures of our God and King." By the end of the evening, Bishop J. Jon Bruno had recognized all six organists - James Buonemani, Thomas Neenan, Craig Phillips, Philip Smith, Edward Tipton and James Walker - as honorary canons of the Cathedral Center of St. Paul. A full house of Episcopalians representing congregations throughout the diocese cheered the new canons and their performances at the concert, one of several events marking the 150th year of Episcopal parish ministry in the Los Angeles area. Teens visit Los Angeles to work and learn during urban pilgrimage The diocese's annual L.A. City Pilgrimage for high school-age young people of the diocese is under way this week. The teens have so far spent an evening discussing racism and privilege with the Rev. Nancy Frausto, priest-in-charge of Trinity, Los Angeles, and assistant at St. Mary's (Mariposa), Los Angeles; assisted homeless people on L.A.'s Skid Row, in the process negotiating public transit and inner-city streets; worked with children at Las Familias del Pueblo, a daycare center for children on Skid Row; chatted with police officers about homelessness; met with Episcopal Urban Interns, college graduates who are spending a year living in community and working at various service sites throughout the community (pictured above); and had lunch and a discussion with Bishop J. Jon Bruno. The young people are from St. James' Church, South Pasadena; St. Mark's Church, Upland; All Saints/Todos los Santos, Oxnard; Church of Our Saviour, San Gabriel; and St. John's Church, La Verne. Leaders are Jana Milhon-Martin of St. John's and St. Mark's; the Rev. Todd Blackham of St. James'; and Gabe Vazquez-Reyes of Church of Our Saviour. The pilgrimage will continue until the end of the week. Photo / Colleen Dodson-Baker
