Disney Hall

Full house set for June 12 Disney Hall concert

A capacity audience from across the six-county Diocese of Los Angeles has been ticketed to fill the Walt Disney Concert Hall for the June 12 program of organ, choir and brass in a festival program marking the Episcopal Church's 150th year of parish ministry in Southern California.

Tickets ordered by email or telephone since March 1 may be claimed through the local parish office designated with each order. Any problems or missing tickets should be reported promptly by email to bishopsoffice@ladio cese.org or by phone to the Cathedral Center concert line at 213.482.2040, ext. 220.

"Volunteers are doing a remarkable job of filling orders for more than 2,200 tickets, and we appreciate everyone's patience as the requests have been processed in the order received," said Robert Williams, diocesan canon for community relations. "We apologize for those delays created as tickets have been released in sequential batches, but within a matter of days the final orders will be disbursed."

While there is no cost for tickets, concert-goers should be prepared for concert hall parking rates starting at $9 per vehicle, Williams said. "Please plan to arrive early to avoid any delays typical of entering the parking structure for a sold-out event," he added, noting that the program will begin on time at 7:30 p.m.

Under the theme "Horizons & Heritage," the concert features a 180-voice choir singing selections from Vierne's Messe Solonelle, as well as works by Durufle, Howells, Parry and Rutter, with organ works by Bach and Reger.

The program will open with an original composition by Craig Phillips, music director of All Saints' Church, Beverly Hills. The concert also features performances by music directors James Buonemani of St. James, Los Angeles; Thomas Neenan of St. Matthew's, Pacific Palisades; Philip Smith of Church of Our Saviour, San Gabriel; Ned Tipton of St. John's ProCathedral, Los Angeles; and James Walker of All Saints, Pasadena, with choir singers from each congregation.

Bishop Jon Bruno will bring greetings during the program, noting dimensions of thanksgiving and forward-looking vision highlighted throughout the concert.

Plans also call for making available later this year a professional recording of the program.

Diocesan seal Newport Beach property
sold to developer

The Corporation Sole, of which Bishop Diocesan J. Jon Bruno is trustee, has accepted a purchase offer of $15 million, twice the appraised value, for Newport Beach property to which Corporation Sole holds title, and which has been made available for the last 18 months to the re-starting mission congregation of St. James the Great.

"This decision was entered prayerfully and practically given the reality that the Corporation Sole and the Corporation of the Diocese can no longer provide assistance for operating expenses," said Bishop Bruno, who is rector of the congregation. "The sale proceeds also offer a considerable asset for investment in future mission and clergy support within the Diocese of Los Angeles."

Bishop Bruno met with congregants on May 17 to discuss the decision, meeting also with the Corporation of the Diocese and Standing Committee at their regularly scheduled May meetings.

Developers are building a new boutique hotel, townhomes and a renovated Lido Village district near the church property. The church is now 40 parking spaces short of city requirements. A neighboring Christian Science church was also recently sold to make way for new construction.

"While the work of the congregation and the current non-stipendiary vicar has been diligent and much appreciated, we must look at the larger picture of sustainability," Bishop Bruno said. He added that his decision was influenced by the outstanding ministries of six neighboring congregations, located in Newport Beach's Corona del Mar section, and in Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Laguna Beach, and Laguna Niguel.
