Year-round Stewardship
Stewardship conference on Saturday cancelled
June 13 and Aug. 29 dates still available
The conference on Year-round Stewardship Seminar scheduled for this Saturday, May 30 at All Saints Church, Riverside, has been cancelled to avoid conflict with a memorial service for clergy spouse Joan Belliss (see "People," below). The conference planned for June 13 (at St. Cross, Hermosa Beach) and Aug. 29 (Cathedral Center, Los Angeles) will be held as scheduled; a new date will be announced in the first quarter ofr 2016 for a similar conference in Deanery 7. At each of the upcoming conferences, Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce, the Program Group on Stewardship and experts in the field will lead participants through a discussion of year-round stewardship, with additional information on planned giving and capital campaigns. Bruce encourages all congregations to send a team to one of the sessions. Participants should bring a picnic lunch and snacks; beverages will be provided. Additional information is here. GFS banner Location changes for GFS anniversary service May 30
Girls Friendly Society-Los Angeles will hold its 138th Anniversary Service and Awards Celebration on Saturday, May 30, 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Upland (a change from the location originally announced). Diocesan GFS chaplain George Okusi, vicar of St. Thomas' Church, Long Beach, will lead the event, themed "All Creatures Great and Small." Participants are asked to wear blue and white and their GFS vests, and to bring hygiene items to donate to homeless teens in Salt Lake City (needed items include toothpaste, toothbrushes, disposable razors, soap, shampoo, conditioner, small combs or hairbrushes, baby wipes, deodorant and washcloths or handtowels), as well as an offering for the Eucharist. A potluck lunch will follow the service; GFS branch leaders are asked to fill in the awards and participation form (here), and make reservations and potluck plans by contacting Margaret Nolde at 714.330.1156 or margaretn63@sbcglobal.net by May 15. Credit Union awards Credit union honors retiring board member, 
tax return workshop leaders 
At the annual meeting May 20 of the Episcopal Community Federal Credit Union, board chair Dan Valdez made presentations to several people for their service to the organization, founded in 1992 as an economic justice ministry in the diocese. Valdez gave a plaque to retiring board member Marvin Jensen, (above, with Valdez) who has served the credit union since it was founded. His colleagues on the board announced that they will make a gift in his honor to the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation, which supports the financial education efforts of credit unions in California and Nevada. Valdez also honored interim credit union CEO Urla Gomes (below left) and credit union supervisory committee member Christine Otiende (below right) for their service in the credit union's tax return workshop, which assisted clients in the preparation of over 250 returns during the 2015 season.

Joan Floyd Belliss, wife of the Rev. Richard Guy Belliss, former rector of All Saints Church, Riverside, and St. Anselm's Church, Garden Grove, died May 22. Most recently the couple lived in Corona, where Dick Belliss assists at St. John's Church. The Rev. Canon John Saville will preside and Dick Belliss will preach at a funeral service at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 30 at St. John's Church, 526 E. Magnolia, Corona. Survivors include the Bellisses' two daughters, Kathleen Belliss Wasserman and Janet Belliss; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. An obituary is here.

All Saints by-the-Sea Episcopal Church 
to Gather in Prayer for Oil-Spill Response
All Saints By-the-Sea Episcopal Church will hold a Prayer for Creation as a way for the community to respond to the May 19 oil spill near Refugio State Beach. "The wider Santa Barbara community is invited to join this prayer as we give thanks for the bounty of God's resources, grieve the current disaster, and pray for the right use of this fragile Earth, our island home," said the Rev. Aimée Eyer-Delevett, All Saints' rector. Eyer-Delevett said the Prayer for Creation will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday [May 28] in the church sanctuary, at 83 Eucalyptus Lane in Montecito.

Garden at Emmanuel, Fullerton Garden party in Fullerton to benefit 'Habitat' projects
Emmanuel Church, Fullerton, invites the diocesan community to a party in their extensive community demonstration garden, dubbed "A Place to Grow." The garden party, a fundraiser for veterans' housing projects, will take place on Saturday, June 13, 5:30 - 8:30. "We are partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, the Episcopal churches in our deanery, and the Veteran Home Repair Program to raise funds for Veteran homeowners," according to a notice on the parish website, "the emphasis being on home improvement projects that will address safety and accessiblity for limited-income veterans." Emmanuel will offer wine and other beverages and hors d'ouvres, plus tours of the 46 flourishing 4 x 8-foot plots in Emmanuel's community garden, its St. Francis Prayer Garden, labyrinth, children's garden and newly planted vineyard. Activities for children also will be offered. Tickets are $20 for adults; children under 12 will be admitted free.

Salt Lake City youth outreach ECW, GFS collecting for Salt Lake City program for homeless youth
The Episcopal Church Women and Girls Friendly Society of the Diocese of Los Angeles are collecting donations for its 2015 Community Connection project, which this year will benefit the Homeless Youth Street Outreach & Homeless Youth Resource Center (HYSO/HYRC) in Salt Lake City, Utah. The ECW Community Connection Gift is a specific outreach response to the needs of the community at the location of the General Convention and ECW Triennial meeting, to be held June 24 - July 3 at the Salt Palace convention center in Salt Lake City. The outreach is often a call for material goods to be given by Triennial delegates to a local shelter or social support group, but monetary donations and gift cards from ECW groups are welcome. 'Healing of Memories' workshop with Michael Lapsley

     South African freedom-fighter-turned-healer the Rev. Michael Lapsley lived through years of social and political activism in apartheid South Africa, and a near fatal attempt on his life, a letter bomb, left him severely injured and traumatized. Lapsley returns to All Saints Church, Pasadena, May 29 - 31 to offer his Healing of Memories Workshop, an experiential process of deep listening, reflecting, creativity, and sharing, led by Lapsley and trained facilitators from the Institute for the Healing of Memories. In sharing their unique stories, participants will be enabled to move from painful memories towards emotional healing and grace. Because of the cumulative and community-building nature of the workshops, participants must commit to attend all three of the sessions: Friday, May 29, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, May 30, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Sunday, May 31, 1:30 - 5:30 p.m. Cost is $40 for meals and art materials. Space is limited.

     Representatives from all congregations, schools, and institutions in the Diocese of Los Angeles are invited to join Katie Mears, Lura Steele and Ethan Lowery of the Episcopal Relief & Development U.S. Disaster Program for this program. "The goal is to equip yourselves to lead the disaster preparedness process in your parish, mission, or school," says the Rev. Canon Michael Bamberger, who is rector of Ascension as well as disaster preparedness coordinator for the Diocese of Los Angeles. "Each congregation is asked to send one or two representatives who are, or will be, actively working to complete their congregation's disaster preparedness plan" as encouraged by the Convention resolution." According to Bamberger, the training will be based on principles of asset-based community development and will offer an introduction to different levels of plans. In addition, there will be instruction on a new tool, the Episcopal Asset Map, which lists a wide variety of services offered in each of the Episcopal Church's dioceses. Materials and lunch are included in the cost of $10 per person.

The play is a modern reimagining of key events in the convent life of historical figure Katherina von Bora, who later married Martin Luther, following the Imperial Diet (the assembly of the Holy Roman Empire) in the city of Worms of 1521.      The Rev. Canon Malcolm Boyd, who died Feb. 27 at the age of 91, had a profound and lasting impact on American culture. From his early days as a Hollywood producer (partners with the legendary Mary Pickford), to becoming the 1960s radical "coffeehouse priest" and best-selling author of Are You Running With Me, Jesus? and 29 other books, Boyd's story weaves through the volatile beginnings of the Freedom Movement, the contentious eruptions against the Vietnam War, and current struggle for social, income and marriage equality. The June 7 event - held on the eve of what would have been his 92nd birthday - will be an afternoon of celebration, surprise guests, music, humor and intimate recollections from Boyd's family and friends. Also featured at this event will be a special sneak preview of major scenes from the upcoming documentary "Disturber Of The Peace," on which Boyd and author/activist Mark Thompson, his partner of more than three decades, have worked for several years. Already a "Festival Favorite" at the Palm Springs Cinema Diverse Film Festival, the film features interviews with Lily Tomlin, Peter Yarrow, Holly Near, Don Bachardy and Tom Hayden, along with an eclectic collection of artists and activists. Refugee child BABY ITEMS: Interfaith Refugee and Immigration Service (IRIS), the refugee resettlement program of the diocese, based in Los Angeles, has recently resettled several refugee families in need of baby items. IRIS is looking for donated baby items, including car seats, cribs, bedding and diapers.
