Fire in Sierra Madre May 30 conference to help churches,
schools plan for disaster
Disaster, ranging from earthquake to flood to fire, can strike any community - and any church - at any time. The 2014 meeting of Diocesan Convention passed a resolution calling on all congregations to develop a plan to follow in a crisis. Representatives from all congregations, schools, and institutions in the Diocese of Los Angeles are invited to join Katie Mears, Lura Steele and Ethan Lowery of the Episcopal Relief & Development U.S. Disaster Program for a one-day conference on Preparedness on Saturday, May 30, 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Church of the Ascension, Sierra Madre. "The goal is to equip yourselves to lead the disaster preparedness process in your parish, mission, or school," says the Rev. Canon Michael Bamberger, who is rector of Ascension as well as disaster preparedness coordinator for the Diocese of Los Angeles. "Each congregation is asked to send one or two representatives who are, or will be, actively working to complete their congregation's disaster preparedness plan" as encouraged by the convention's resolution. According to Bamberger, the training will be based on principles of asset-based community development and will offer an introduction to different levels of plans. In addition, there will be instruction on a new tool, the Episcopal Asset Map, which lists a wide variety of services offered in each of the Episcopal Church's 109 dioceses. Materials and lunch are included in the cost of $10 per person. Registration is online here. For more information, contact Bamberger at [email protected].

According to an announcement by Chalk Repertory, "Our staging of the play in St. John's will aim to explore the environs of the cathedral and in so doing, will allow the audience to experience the world of the play in a way that illuminates and elevates. Diet of Worms will have a diverse cast that reflects the Los Angeles community of St. John's and will explore old and new ideas of womanhood and faith, and the limitations created by society and ourselves."
