Episcopal agency seeks funds
for Nepal earthquake relief efforts
Episcopal Relief & Development is working with the ecumenical ACT Alliance in Nepal and local partners in northern India and southwest China regarding urgent needs and assessment efforts following the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck near Kathmandu on the morning of April 25.
The earthquake was centered east of Nepal's capital, near the town of Pokhara, though the initial quake and subsequent aftershocks were felt as far away as Pakistan, more than 800 miles away. The death toll reported late April 27 exceeds 3,900, including 17 who died in an avalanche on Mt. Everest, with the number expected to rise. Due to the rough terrain and isolated nature of communities in Nepal and across the Himalayas, search and rescue efforts are being carried out on foot and by helicopter. Communications are still down across wide areas of the region, further hampering assessment and rescue efforts. Responding to immediate needs for food, clean water and shelter, as well as the need for accurate information through on-the-ground assessment, Episcopal Relief & Development will support ACT Alliance efforts implemented through a partner office in Kathmandu.
The ACT Alliance works in coordination with major international groups such as UN OCHA to maximize efficiency and impact of aid, mobilizing local networks to reach remote areas.
Episcopal Relief & Development is in contact with the Anglican Diocese of West Malaysia regarding support for the work of the Deanery of Nepal, which is part of the Diocese of Singapore. The organization may also support other partners in the region including CASA, the humanitarian arm of the National Council of Churches in India, and the Amity Foundation, an independent Christian organization in China.
Donations to Episcopal Relief & Development's Nepal Earthquake Response Fund may be sent online here www.episcopalrelief.org/NepalRelief, or mailed to P.O. Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058.
Bishop J. Jon Bruno thanks children from St. Augustine's, Santa Monica, whose efforts raised $2,500 for water development projects.
Earth Day event puts focus on water, locally and worldwide
About 35 Episcopalians of all ages came together at the Cathedral Center April 22 for an Earth Day event focused on overseas water ministries and local water conservation. As part of the event, young people from St. Augustine by-the-Sea Church, Santa Monica, presented to Bishop J. Jon Bruno a check for more than $2,500, funds they raised by selling water-themed Christmas ornaments as part of a "Water is Sacred" program, under the leadership of their youth director, Jennifer Wagner Pavia. Bruno matched the funds, which will be sent to Episcopal Relief & Development to help dig wells in impoverished areas. Participants also watched a screening of "Ru: Water is Life," a documentary about girls in South Sudan who spend much of their time seeking fresh (and sometimes unclean) water to help their families survive. The event was part of the "water tithe" program launched by Bruno during Lent. In addition to parishioners of St. Augustine's Church and St. Athanasius Church at the Cathedral Center, participants included members of St. George's, Hawthorne; St. Cross, Hermosa Beach; St. John's, La Verne; Christ the Good Shepherd, Los Angeles; All Saints, Pasadena; and St. John's, Rancho Santa Margarita. For more about the diocese's water conservation and awareness efforts, contact Troy Elder, bishop's legate for global partnership, at 213.482.2040, ext. 245, or telder@ladiocese.org.
