Honoring Lincoln on 150th anniversary of his death
In a 150th-year milestone for city and parish on April 19, Cathedral Center Provost Frank Alton read the historic funeral oration for President Lincoln, the same text delivered by Canon Alton's earliest predecessor, Episcopal priest Elias Birdsall, exactly 150 years before on April 19, 1865, then a citywide day of mourning. Joining Alton in delivering compelling calls to action were Nirinjan Singh Khalsa, president of the Los Angeles City Human Relations Commission, and Bishop J. Jon Bruno. Prayers were offered by Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce, and music provided by the Episcopal Chorale Society, under the direction of Canon Charles Cheatham, with the drum line of L.A.'s Abraham Lincoln High School. The congregation gathered to "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and to reflect on the program titled "Civil Rights Now: Bringing Lincoln's Legacy to Life." The observance was hosted by St. Athanasius at the Cathedral Center as part of its "Horizons & Heritage" commemoration of 150 years of parish ministry. Photo/Bob Williams
