Reservations open for 150th-year
concert on June 12 at Disney Hall

Ticket reservations are now open to the diocesan community on a first-come, first-served basis for the June 12 gala concert of organ, brass and choir at L.A.'s Walt Disney Concert Hall to mark the Episcopal Church's 150th year of parish ministry Southern California.

Planned under the theme "Horizons and Heritage," the program will feature works of Vierne, Parry, Vaughn Williams, and local composer Craig Phillips of All Saints Church in Beverly Hills, among others. Six area parish music directors will rotate as conductors and featured organists in a program coordinated by Philip Smith, conservator of the Walt Disney Concert Hall organ and choirmaster at Church of Our Saviour, San Gabriel.

Bishop Jon Bruno will lead special group recognition of all music directors and choir singers in attendance. Joining Smith and Phillips as principals are James Buonemani of St. James Church, Los Angeles; Thomas Neenan of St. Matthew's, Pacific Palisades; Ned Tipton of St. John's ProCathedral, Los Angeles; and James Walker of All Saints, Pasadena.

In celebration of the 150th anniversary, tickets are free of charge, but audience members should plan on parking fees of at least $9 per vehicle. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. More information and reservation instructions here.

Clergy renew vows at Holy Week service
"The reality of vocation is being for God and with God in the midst of our people, helping them to discover their own gifts and vocation. ... Be ever faithful," Bishop J. Jon Bruno told clergy of the diocese gathered March 31 at the Cathedral Center for the annual Renewal of Vows. Bishop Suffragan Mary D. Glasspool presided at the Liturgy of the Word and the renewal of vows; Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce celebrated the Eucharist.

Ru: Water Is Life Earth Day film screening
to launch discussion of
local, global water issues

The Program Group on Global Partnership and Seeds of Hope invite the diocesan community and friends to an Earth Day film screening, dinner, and consciousness-raising event at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22 at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul.  As part of the diocese's recently launched water-tithing initiative, the program will feature a screening of "Ru: Water is Life," a short documentary that portrays the plight of millions of girls worldwide who spend much of each day in pursuit of water, usually unclean, just to survive. The evening will also feature representatives from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, who will discuss ways that congregations can work to reduce their water consumption. Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot Screening of Pasadena director's documentary Selma: Bridge to the Ballot planned at All Saints

A screening of Pasadena director Bill Brummel's documentary Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot will be held at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Thursday, April 9, 7 p.m. The film is a tapestry of historical footage, interviews, photos and dramatic drawings woven with a freedom song soundtrack telling the story of the students and teachers of Selma, Alabama, who fought for voting rights in the early 1960's. Join All Saints rector Ed Bacon, the Rev. Zelda Kennedy, Juliana Serrano and Director Bill Brummel for a panel discussion following the screening. The event is free. Prism event with Dead Man Walking author Helen Prejean rescheduled to May 27
Sister Helen Prejean, the author of Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States and The Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness of Wrongful Executions, will speak at "An Evening with Helen Prejean," an event benefiting Prism Restorative Justice at the Church of Our Saviour in San Gabriel, beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27 (rescheduled from the originally announced date of April 17). Film series at Messiah, Santa Ana, to present NO, a drama of Chile's rebirth
Church of the Messiah, Santa Ana, will continue its Peace & Justice Film Series with the film NO, by Pablo Larrain, on Wednesday, April 15 at 7 p.m.
NO dramatizes the creative ad campaign for a "no" vote in the 1988 plebiscite on continuation of the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile. Interspersed with documentary footage of demonstrations and pro-democracy activism from the time, it tells the story of a nation's rebirth. NO was nominated for numerous international film award, including a nomination for the Academy Awards Best Foreign Film. It received the Art Cinema Award at the 2012 Cannes Festival. The event is free and all are welcome. Light refreshments will be served. Church of the Messiah is located at 614 N. Bush Street, Santa Ana, CA  92701. St. John's ProCathedral to host performance of 12th-century play by Hildegard von Bingen
Ordo Virtutum, an allegorical morality play by 12th-century Benedictine nun, mystic, writer and composer Hildegard von Bingen, will be performed Friday and Saturday, April 24 - 25, at the ProCathedral of St. John in Los Angeles. Performances will begin at 7:30 both evenings. Ordo Virtutum ("The Way of the Virtues") tells of the struggles of a pure soul, Anima, as she wrestles with worldly temptations as urged on by Diabolus. Eighteen "Virtutes" help her resist. The play, accompanied by an ensemble of medieval instruments, will be presented by Cantoris Los Angeles, a sponsored by the Arts Guild of St. John's, and The Sorel Organization. Artistic director of Cantoris Los Angeles is Katina Mitchell; stage director is Patricia McKee. The play is a little more than an hour in length. Supertitles will assist the audience in following the Latin text. Tickets are $20 ($10 for students and seniors), and may be purchased at 213.747.6285, ext. 106, or make reservations at music@stjohnsla.org. The Four Vision Quests of Jesus Bishop Steven Charleston
to launch new book
at Guibord Center event

Native American elder and Episcopal Bishop Steven Charleston will launch his latest book, The Four Vision Quests of Jesus, as a special event of The Guibord Center on Saturday, May 23, 4 - 6 p.m. at the Guibord Center at St. John's ProCathedral, Los Angeles. Charleston, whose daily spiritual writings on Facebook have thousands of followers, has also served as national director for Native American ministries for the Episcopal Church. A member of the Choctaw Nation, he is a former bishop of the Diocese of Alaska and president and dean of Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. People of God, Rise Up Peace groups to sponsor conference on the Holy Land
Kairos USA and the Palestine Israel Network L.A. of Episcopal Peace Fellowship, with other faith groups, will co-sponsor a one-day conference, "People of God, Rise Up!" on Saturday, April 18, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1524 South Fremont Avenue, South Pasadena. People of faith who want to understand, educate others and work to bring a just peace to all in the Holy Land will gather for large group sessions, small group discussion, live musical performances by the Falafel Group, new video "Palestinian Voices" and workshops to increase their understanding of life in the Holy Land, explore the foundational Kairos Palestine document, and come away equipped for action. Speakers will include the Rev. Diane Dulin and the Rev. Jeff Wright of Kairos USA; Mike Coogan, legislative advocate in Washington, D.C. for U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation; the Rt. Rev.
