L.A. to honor Abe Lincoln at 150th year after death
All are invited to April 19 liturgy planned to echo 1865 rites
A reading of the same 1865 sermon preached by Episcopal priest Elias Birdsall in Los Angeles to eulogize President Abraham Lincoln will be central in an April 19 civic memorial service to which community leaders and the public are invited.
The 2 p.m. Sunday rites will unfold 150 years to the day after L.A.'s then-mayor, Damien Marchessault, and members of the city's Common Council gathered with other Angelenos to hear Birdsall - first rector of the new St. Athanasius Church - deliver the funeral oration to public and press acclaim. That day, all businesses and government offices were closed in honor of the slain president.
Venue for the upcoming service is the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Ave., Los Angeles, where its Congregation of St. Athanasius is also marking its 150th year as Southern California's oldest continuing Protestant house of worship.
Cathedral Center Provost Frank Alton, most recent successor to Birdsall, will read the sermon text, to which select civic and faith leaders will offer brief responses. Period music and prayers will complement the reading. Bishop J. Jon Bruno of the Diocese of Los Angeles will preside.
More information may be requested by email to media@ladiocese.org, or by phoning the Cathedral Center at 213.482.2040, ext. 240.
