L.A. City Council adjourns in memory of Malcolm Boyd  At left: The Los Angeles City Council at its March 4 meeting rises in honor of the late Rev. Canon Malcolm Boyd, who died Feb. 27 at age 91 from complications of pneumonia. Below: Councilman Mitch O'Farrell of the 13th District, accompanied by Bishop J. Jon Bruno of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and Mark Thompson, Canon Boyd's life partner of 31 years, presents a tribute to Boyd. Bishop Bruno also addressed the council in remembrance of Boyd, a longtime activist, a Freedom Rider during civil rights demonstrations in the 1960s, and author of the 1965 bestselling book of prayers Are You Running With Me, Jesus? as well as 29 other books. A documentary of Boyd's life, Malcolm Boyd: Disturber of the Peace, is in production under the direction of award-winning filmmaker Andrew Thomas. (More information about the documentary is here.) Merrily Dunlap named honorary canon
Bishop J. Jon Bruno named Merrily Dunlap, former executive director of the Commission on Schools of the Diocese of Los Angeles, an honorary canon of the Cathedral Center of St. Paul during a meeting of the commission on March 3. Pictured at left is Canon Serena Beeks, current executive director of schools. Dunlap, a former head of school for St. Mark's Episcopal School, Upland, and former teacher at St. Mark's Episcopal School in Downey, served from 2000 to 2009 on the governing board of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, which awarded her its Ruth Jenkins Award "for dedicated and exemplary work in and service to Episcopal schools" at its biennial meeting in 2012. Acolyte Olympics coming on April 25
The Acolyte Olympics will bring youth from all over the Diocese of Los Angeles together for an afternoon of fun, fellowship and competition on Saturday, April 25, 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at St. James' Episcopal Church, South Pasadena. (Please note: this event originally was scheduled for March 21.) Acolyte Olympians will compete in events such as the torch relay, free-form candle snuffing and interpretative/synchronized procession. The closing ceremonies of the games will feature a Eucharist where all the acolytes will learn the skills to serve in their own congregations. Participants should bring their church's banner for the final procession, and wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Lunch will be provided; a $5 donation per person will help offset the cost. Workshop on immigration planned in Pasadena The Latino-Hispanic Ministry at All Saints Church, Pasadena, will present a Workshop on Immigration on Saturday, March 14, 9 a.m. - 12 noon in the All Saints Forum. It will feature a presentation about the various deferred action programs (DACA and DAPA), the status of President Obama's executive action on immigration, legal resources and consultations with lawyers and trained immigration advocates.  St. Paul's Church, Tustin, to host two-day Interfaith Youth Council Faith Festival and Forum
St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Tustin will be the site of the annual two day Interfaith Youth Council of Orange County's Teen Faith Festival and Youth Forum on Saturday, March 14, and Sunday, March 15. This year's theme is "Religion and Science in the 21st Century." Saturday's festival will be held from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.. Participant teens are invited to express their faith through art, dance and music. The festival is open to everyone at no charge. Sunday's forum, scheduled for 11:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. will give teens an opportunity to express their faith through dialogue. High school students are invited to participate and adults are welcome to observe. The Interfaith Youth Council of Orange County serves high school students who are members of a wide variety of faith traditions. The Council's mission is to teach teens how to conduct useful interfaith dialogues that increase understanding among members of various faiths. Participants have the opportunity to gain leadership and dialogue skills as they articulate the tenants of their own faith and learn the principles of others' traditions. They include Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Muslims, Jains, Sikhs, Hindus, Buddhists, Zoroastrians, Baha'is, Latter-Day Saints, agnostics and others. All are invited to Lenten Fish Supper at St. Philip's, Los Angeles St Philip's Episcopal Church invites the diocesan community to attend a Caribbean-style Lenten Fish Supper on Tuesday, March 31, 2 - 7 p.m. The event will be held at the church parish hall at 2800 Stanford Avenue, Los Angeles 90011, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. A healthy preparation of fish and vegetables served island style will highlight a festive evening of music, dancing and fun. Sierra Madre's Gooden School announces summer courses The Gooden School, an Episcopal Church-related academy in Sierra Madre, will offer summer classes for students in kindergarten through eighth grade with ample opportunities for creativity and new experiences such as playing the ukulele, learning Mandarin, smart snacking, drawing and painting, poetry and short story writing, hip hop dancing, sewing, sports, games and more. A class in ISEE and HSPT test preparation will also be offered for those in grades 7 and 8. Planned field trips include the California Science Center, Universal Studios Hollywood and the Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach. Workshops on forgiveness slated at Trinity, Orange The Rev. Rob Voyle, Episcopal priest, psychologist and executive coach, will lead two workshops at Trinity Church in Orange on the subject of forgiveness. 'Breath of Buddha, Mind of Christ' is theme of Lenten quiet day at All Saints, Pasadena The Rev. Ed Bacon, rector (pictured), will lead "The Breath of Buddha; the Mind of Christ," a Lenten quiet day at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Saturday, March 21, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the All Saints Learning Center. "St. Paul calls for us to have a new mind: the mind of Christ," says the event announcement. "One way we can transform ourselves is by renewing our minds through Buddhist mindfulness techniques and Dr. Dan Siegel's 'Wheel of Awareness.'"
