Pasadena author Nat Read to deliver Feb. 28 Birdsall lecture on L.A. church history All are welcome for morning talk followed by workshop for parish, mission historians
Acclaimed for his lively and insightful presentation style, Pasadena historian Nat B. Read will deliver the Feb. 28 Birdsall Lecture drawing from his recent book Don Benito Wilson: From Mountain Man to Mayor, focusing on one of the key founders of Episcopal congregations continuing today in Los Angeles and San Gabriel. The event will be held at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles 90026. The morning session, beginning at 10 a.m. and concluding by 12 noon, will feature Read's lecture as part of the ongoing series honoring Elias Birdsall, founding rector of St. Athanasius Episcopal Church 150 years ago in Los Angeles. Lunch will be served, followed by a workshop for historians of parish and mission congregations, together with other interested participants. First seminar on year-round stewardship coming up Feb. 21 The first of a series of seminars on year-round stewardship is coming up on Saturday, Feb. 21, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at St. Columba's Church, Camarillo. Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce, members of the Program Group on Stewardship, and experts in the field will lead participants through a discussion of year-round stewardship, with additional information on planned giving and capital campaigns. Bishop Bruce encourages all congregations to send a team to one or more of the six sessions. Participants should bring a picnic lunch and snacks; beverages will be provided. Global Partnership program group to convene human rights-themed seminar
The Program Group on Global Partnership invites the diocesan community and friends to a seminar titled "Human Rights In Global Partnership" on Saturday, March 7, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Edmund's Episcopal Church, San Marino. The seminar will feature presentations by
- the Most Rev. Samuel Azariah, primate of Pakistan
- the Rev. Khushnud Azariah, Pakistan's first female Episcopal priest;
- the Rev. David Copley, Global Partnerships & Mission Personnel Officer for the Episcopal Church;
- Troy Elder, Bishop's Legate for Global Partnership; and
- Hannah Perls, development director, Foundation Cristosal (El Salvador).
The seminar is designed to strengthen tools for effective global partnership in diocesan parishes, missions and institutions, and provide opportunities to build relationships for future work. Coadjutor search committee sets first meeting The committee to identify candidates for election in 2016 as bishop coadjutor of the Diocese of Los Angeles will meet February 11, convened by the Rev. Julian Bull, chair of the search committee and head of school at Campbell Hall, North Hollywood. REQUIESCANT Elizabeth Evans Morton June 30, 1924 - January 27, 2015
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6 at All Saints Church, Pasadena, for Elizabeth (Liz) Morton, longtime member at that parish. She was 90. Morton, founder and director of the AIDS Service Center in Pasadena and a founding director of the Foothill Free Clinic, was All Saints' first female senior warden, and the first woman to be elected a director of the Corporation of the Diocese of Los Angeles (1978). She also was a trustee of the Claremont Graduate University, a president of the Junior League, and a founding member of the Pasadena Art Alliance, in addition to her involvement with many other community organizations. Her husband, Bobby, and her daughter, Susan, predeceased her. Survivors include her daughter Liza Gossett of Bellingham, Washington, her granddaughter Ashley Parker of Pasadena, and her sister Nancy Gruner of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
 Jeffrey S. Terry March 27, 1954 - January 26, 2015 A memorial service for Jeffrey Terry will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7 at St. Cross Church, 1818 Monterey Blvd., Hermosa Beach, where he was a member with his wife, lay leader Patricia Terry. A reception in Parker Hall will follow the service. Terry was an employee of Los Angeles County for 38 years. In addition to his wife, survivors include their children Robert, William (Michelle) and Robynn (Jerome); a grandson, Maxwell; his mother Mae, and his brother Mark (Penny). His father, who predeceased him, was World War II Tuskegee Airman Lt. Roger "Bill" Terry.

ECF workshop will help congregations, schools with planned giving The Episcopal Church Foundation will present "Creating and Enhancing Planned Giving Ministries," a free workshop to empower congregations and Episcopal schools, on Saturday, March 7, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. at Church of Our Saviour, 535 West Roses Road, San Gabriel. Jim W.N. Murphy, managing program director of ECF, will lead the presentation, which will cover the following topics:
- Taking the mystery out of planned giving and endowments for congregations or Episcopal schools
- Explaining in easy-to-understand terms how planned giving differs from annual stewardship and capital campaigns, and how an organization can build endowments through wills, life income and other planned gifts.
- A review of the planned giving instruments, and the importance of vision, protecting and growing an endowment, and how to invite others to remember a parish or school through estate and financial planning.
- An examination of important documents to use for structuring an endowment and clarifying its purpose.
- How planned giving can be used to enhance ministries and overall mission. ECF's new comprehensive resource, Planned Giving on Demand, will also be reviewed.
Participants will leave the workshop with a plan of action. ECF staff can be available to meet with leaders from congregations or schools for 20 minutes sessions following the workshop (must be scheduled in advance). Feb. 20 - 22 young adults' retreat to consider 'sacred community' "Sacred Community: Spiritual Friendship in a Sea of Other Relationships" will be the theme of a diocesan retreat for young adults Feb. 20 -22 at Big Bear Lake. Finding real community can be challenging on the journey of faith, particularly for young adults. While we form many relationships over the course of our lives, few rise to the level of sacred community. What are the hallmarks of meaningful community? What sets spiritual friendship apart from other relationships? How can we find and nurture sacred community in our lives and in our parishes? Join other young adults in the Diocese of Los Angeles for this weekend retreat. What better way to contemplate and experience community than with new and old friends in a lakeside cabin in Big Bear? Learn to prune fruit trees with arborist Pieter Severynen Learn the art and science of pruning fruit trees from expert arborist Pieter Severynen at a free workshop on Sunday, Feb. 15, 12 noon - 3 p.m. at Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, Woodland Hills. Severynen will demonstrate pruning techniques on the various stone fruit trees at the Prince of Peace orchard. Attendees will learn about structure, shaping, and cuts on several varieties of fruit trees as well as invaluable instruction on fruit tree selection, rootstocks, planting, irrigation, and mulch. As part of this hands-on workshop, participants will help to prune some of the 115 trees in the orchard, ensuring a bountiful harvest of fruit to benefit the clients of the West Valley Food Pantry. Workshop attendees are encouraged to bring sun protection, garden gloves, pruning clippers if possible (please label them with the owner's name), and a water bottle, and to wear sturdy closed-toed shoes. Make an Anglican rosary at Lenten Quiet Day Suzanne Edwards-Acton will lead a Lenten Anglican Rosary Quiet Day on Saturday, Feb. 21, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Participants will learn about the history, structure, and development of the Anglican rosary as well as several ways to use these sets of prayer beads as a tool for organizing time of prayer and as a means for entering into contemplative prayer and initiating silence in meditation. Participants will create their own Anglican rosaries and meet new friends and fellow travelers on the journey. Cost is $25, which includes lunch and materials. 'Holy Coding' classes to begin Feb. 7 at St. James the Great, Newport Beach Saint James the Great Church in Newport Beach is expanding its Holy Coding computer-coding classes for kids and adults. The coding team will introduce MIT Media Lab's ScratchJr, UC San Diego/ ThoughtSTEM's brand-new LearntoMod, and even board games that teach programming. Starting on Feb. 7 at St. James', located at 3209 Via Lido in Newport Beach, Holy Coding will offer six coding and game development courses. Holy Coding also offers 12-week coding "bootcamps" for adults, beginning March 2, as well as "meetups" of the School of Devs, a community for "coders, wannabe and aspiring developers." Join the Zydeco Mass and Mardi Gras celebration in Long Beach St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Long Beach, invites the diocesan community to its fifth annual Zydeco Mass and Mardi Gras Celebration on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 7 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. The Mass will be enlivened by the music of Dempsey Pappion and the Pappion Louisiana Band. Afterward, the band will continue to charm with their repertoire of Zydeco, Cajun, and Creole tunes at the dinner/dance in Belliss Hall. Dinner will feature such New Orleans-style favorites as gumbo and BBQ shrimp, with King cake for dessert. All are welcome! The 7p.m. Zydeco Mass is free. LGBT Ministry's Mardi Gras party is Feb. 15 The Program Group on LGBT Ministry of the Diocese of Los Angeles invites all for a celebration of food, fun and friends at its 2015 Mardi Gras Party at the home of the Rev. Steve Huber, rector of All Saints Church, Beverly Hills, on Sunday, Feb. 15, 6 to 8 p.m. The event will feature hearty hors d'oeuvres and festive beverages. Wear your beads! What are the scientific insights that reveal why a spiritual life with meaning and connection is "good for you"? Face-to-Face Weekly Way of Radical Compassion(First session)

- 12 weeks of skill-based face-to-face instruction on compassionate living within families, work, ministry, and the world
- Weekly spiritual practices designed for use in daily life
- Weekly small group interactions with other companions who are practicing the Way of Radical Compassion
- Practices and skills for working with difficult others including perpetrators, people who have wounded us, people we are in conflict with, and others we might call "enemies."
- A total of two hours of face-to-face practice and group interactions, plus additional optional reading and written reflections per week.
Cost for the 12-week program, which will focus on compassion-skill development and personal formation, is $300. Returning participants who have previously completed The Way of Radical Compassion program can attend at no charge.
