Refugee children's advocates program Diocesan volunteers needed to assist
refugee children

The Diocese of Los Angeles has taken a leadership role among interfaith communities in addressing local aspects of the ongoing child refugee crisis, which in 2014 saw over 50,000 children detained at the U.S.-Mexico border as they fled violence and extreme poverty in Central America. Building on its longstanding companion relationship with the Diocese of El Salvador and its historical ties to migrant communities, in 2015 the diocese is launching a pilot welcoming-congregation program to assist refugee children who have been temporarily resettled in and around Los Angeles. The diocesan Program Group on Global Partnership is recruiting and training volunteer "acompańeras" and "acompańeros," who will be paired with refugee children and their sponsoring families. Each volunteer will provide one or more children with weekly telephone check-ins, ongoing moral and spiritual support, and critical links to needed social services while the children's deportation cases are pending. (Volunteers will not be housing or otherwise providing material support to the children, who have been assigned sponsors by the court system.) A volunteer training session is scheduled for Jan. 24 at the Cathedral Center: click here for more information.

malcolmboydI talk to trees ... do you?

 by Malcolm Boyd

The tree and I are having a conversation. Yes, without words. In fact, I've learned that trees don't use words.

Since I am human, I do. I just crossed my legs. The tree, located in a favorite park that is a visiting place of mine, is 300 years old. Now, I have discovered the trees have their own lives, quite separate from ours. Yet the tree and I are mysteriously close friends. We share a lot of feelings. We don't exactly share a sense of humor, but genuine friendship stirs between us.
