Jerusalem Epiphanies' lecture set for Jan. 24 with leader of Churches for Middle East Peace
Retired U.S. Ambassador Warren Clark to keynote first of three talks marking Episcopal Church's 150th year of parish ministry in Southland
Retired U.S. Ambassador Warren Clark, executive director of the Washington D.C.-based Churches for Middle East Peace, will on Jan. 24 provide the keynote address launching the Elias Birdsall Memorial Lectures set to mark the Episcopal Church's 150th year of parish ministry in Southern California. All are welcome for the lecture, beginning at 10 a.m. in the Great Hall of L.A.'s Cathedral Center of Paul, home to St. Athanasius Episcopal Church where Birdsall served as first rector starting in 1864. In the spring of 1865, Birdsall gained notoriety for the parish with both his civic funeral oration following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, and a series of three topical lectures on the nexus of faith and government, international policy in Central America, and English-language communication. The leadership of Birdsall, also an early Los Angeles superintendent of public instruction, will be honored by the new 2015 lectures. Read more here.
Diocesan volunteers needed to assist refugee children The Diocese of Los Angeles has taken a leadership role among interfaith communities in addressing local aspects of the ongoing child refugee crisis, which in 2014 saw over 50,000 children detained at the U.S.-Mexico border as they fled violence and extreme poverty in Central America. Building on its longstanding companion relationship with the Diocese of El Salvador and its historical ties to migrant communities, in 2015 the diocese is launching a pilot welcoming-congregation program to assist refugee children who have been temporarily resettled in and around Los Angeles. Beginning in January, the diocesan Program Group on Global Partnership is recruiting and training volunteer "acompaeras" and "acompaeros," who will be paired with refugee children and their sponsoring families. Each volunteer will provide one or more children with weekly telephone check-ins, ongoing moral and spiritual support, and critical links to needed social services while the children's deportation cases are pending. (Volunteers will not be housing or otherwise providing material support to the children, who have been assigned sponsors by the court system.) For further information contact Troy Elder, bishop's legate for global partnerships, at [email protected] or 213.482.2040, ext. 245. Seminars to help plan year-round stewardshipStewardship is -- or should be -- a year-round effort, according to experts in the field, including Bishop Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce, who is stewardship officer for the Diocese of Los Angeles in addition to her episcopal role. With the help of the Program Group on Stewardship, Bruce has called for a series of regional seminars on year-round stewardship, planned giving, and capital campaigns.
Each of the six seminars will take place on a Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Scheduled dates and locations are:
- Saturday, February 21
St. Columba's Church, Camarillo - Saturday, April 25
Blessed Sacrament Church, Placentia - Saturday, May 16
St. Mark's Church, Glendale - Saturday, May 30
All Saints' Church, Riverside - Saturday, June 13
St. Cross Church, Hermosa Beach - Saturday, August 29
Cathedral Center of St. Paul, Los Angeles
Bruce encourages all congregations to send a team to one of the six sessions, saying "Bring a picnic lunch and come prepared to listen, ask questions, process - and come away with ideas for your own year-round stewardship work in your congregation!" For more information, email to [email protected]. Bishop Wright of Atlanta to keynote MLK event

I talk to trees ... do you? by Malcolm Boyd The tree and I are having a conversation. Yes, without words. In fact, I've learned that trees don't use words.
Since I am human, I do. I just crossed my legs. The tree, located in a favorite park that is a visiting place of mine, is 300 years old. Now, I have discovered the trees have their own lives, quite separate from ours. Yet the tree and I are mysteriously close friends. We share a lot of feelings. We don't exactly share a sense of humor, but genuine friendship stirs between us.
