Episcopal Preaching Conference 2015 speakers Episcopal Preaching Conference to be held at Cathedral Center
'La Predicación de Jesús: Preaching in Spanish' scheduled for March 5 - 7
The 2015 National Episcopal Preaching Conference, titled "La Predicación de Jesús: Preaching in Spanish," will be held at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul on March 5 - 7, 2015. The conference is for all who are interested in preaching more effectively in Spanish and English - native speakers and those just learning, seminarians, clergy and laity. In a mix of worship and celebration, plenary sessions and preaching groups, participants will learn and grow together as they study and proclaim Jesus. Featured speakers will be Justo Gonzalez, Cuban American Methodist historian and theologian; Simón Bautista, canon missioner for Latino ministries and outreach at Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral in Houston, Texas; and Arturo Bańuelas, cofounder of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians in the United States and pastor of St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, El Paso, Texas. Workshop and preaching group leaders include Bishop Diane Jardine Bruce, Tom Callard, Anthony Guillén, Miquelina Howell, Luis León and Margarita Santana. Registration (includes meals) is $75 before Feb. 1, 2015 or $100 thereafter. Daily registration fee is $40. The conference begins at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 5 and concludes at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 7. For more information and to register, click here.

Libby LaneLibby Lane to be first Church of England's first woman bishop
The Rev. Libby Lane has been appointed a bishop in the Diocese of Chester, England -- the first woman to be so designated. She currently is vicar of St. Peter's Church, Hale, and St. Elizabeth's Church, Ashley. As Bishop of Stockport she will serve as a bishop suffragan in the Chester diocese. Her consecration will take place on Monday, Jan. 26 at York Minster. Read more here.

Cathedral Center of St. Paul Holiday closures for diocesan offices at theCathedral Center
Update, Weekly to take hiatus
for weeks of Dec. 28 and Jan. 4

Diocesan offices at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday, December 24 and 25 in observance of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. They also will close on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, in observance of New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

The Episcopal News Update and the Episcopal News Weekly and El Pueblo bulletin inserts will be on hiatus for the weeks of Dec. 28 and Jan. 4. Publication of the Update will resume on Jan. 7 (Jan. 11 issue). The Weekly and El Pueblo will next be published for Jan. 11.

Ordination Four to be ordained to diaconate
Bishop J. Jon Bruno will ordain Paul Robert Elder, Guy Anthony Leemhuis, Dennis Arnol Sheridan and Scott Clay Taylor to the Sacred Order of Deacons at 10 a.m. osn Saturday, Dec. 20 at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul. The presence and prayers of the diocesan community are requested.

The Rev. Jim Friedrich, a longtime priest of the Diocese of Los Angeles now residing in Washington State, has had a photo essay on "perceptions of church" published in the online magazine at The Episcopal Cafe here. He also was awarded the annual Bishop's Preaching Award in the Diocese of Olympia at their November convention. His winning homily, "Where Did Jesus Go?," can be found on his blog here. Known for designing creative worship at St. John's ProCathedral, Los Angeles, and his videos on The Story of Anglicanism and The Story of the Episcopal Church, Friedrich now blogs as The Religious Imagineer. He is pictured here at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela during a 500-mile pilgrimage last Spring.

Bishop Robert Wright Bishop Wright of Atlanta to keynote MLK event
The Rt. Rev. Robert Wright, Bishop of Atlanta, will deliver the keynote address at the 2015 diocesan celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The event will take place at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles 90026, at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17. Wright is the first African American to become an Episcopal bishop in Georgia. He formerly served as rector of St. Paul's Church, Atlanta, and canon pastor and vicar at the Cathedral of St. John in New York.He is an adjunct professor at Virginia Theological Seminary. Elias Birdsall The Birdsall Lectures
to begin Jan. 23 - 24

The diocese's celebration of the 150th anniversary of Episcopal Church ministry in Los Angeles, begun at Diocesan Convention and themed "Horizons & Heritage," will continue on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 23 - 24, with the first installment of the Birdsall Lectures, named for the Rev. Elias Birdsall (pictured), first priest at St. Athanasius' Church, Los Angeles. The first lecture will be a symposium titled "Jerusalem Epiphanies - Churches for Middle East Peace." It will be held in the Great Hall at the Cathedral Center.

Dancer at Bishops' Ball Bishop's Ball planned for
Jan. 31 in Los Angeles

The annual Bishops' Ball for high-school age youth of the diocese will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31 at St. Mary's Church, 961 S. Mariposa Avenue, Los Angeles 90006. Theme for the event, which will be coordinated by the Rev. Nancy Frausto of St. Mary's, is inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel The Great Gatsby. The Bishops' Ball has traditionally featured music, food, games and fellowship. All youth of the diocese, with their leaders, are invited to attend.

Epiphany retreat

Stillpoint: The Center for Christian Spirituality will present "Writing Between the Layers," an Epiphany retreat with Judith L. Stillpoint invites writers, veteran journal keepers, and those just beginning to put word to paper or screen to gather in the beauty of winter and in the season of Epiphany - allowing for the breaking-in of the spiritual new. Judith Favor, teacher, writer, and spiritual director, is a retired UCC pastor and teacher at Claremont School of Theology. She graduated from the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation in 1985, and has belonged to Spiritual Directors International since it began.      A retreat for those who come to the Episcopal Church from other faith communities and who have experienced significant wounds from past religious experience. Leaders will be Brother Bob Pierson of the Order of the Holy Cross and the Rev. Peter Pearson, an Episcopal priest from Scranton, Pennsylvania, both of whom are former members of Roman Catholic Benedictine monastic communities. Participants will be invited to share their stories in large and small groups and take part in healing prayer and worship. They also will talk about their experiences in the Episcopal Church. The cost is $300 per person for the weekend, which includes lodging and all meals. A deposit of $50 is required.

In the winter of 1972 I was invited to live as a guest of Mishkenot Sha'ananin in the legendary city of Jerusalem. It proved to be a rare opportunity to engage in a dialogue with Israeli and Palestinian writers and artists involved in a search for peace. "It is tragic that, in effect, Arabs and Jews are in the Alamo now killing each other," was an oft-heard remark.
