'Horizons & Heritage' at Diocesan Convention
Bishop Bruno calls for bishop coadjutor election
While celebrating 150 years of Episcopal ministry in Los Angeles, Bishop Jon Bruno called upon the 119th annual meeting of the Diocese of Los Angeles to honor that legacy by building sustainable ministries for the future.
From the Civil War to farmworker and civil rights, marriage equality and social, economic and environmental justice, each generation of Southland Episcopalians has engaged "ministries of vitality" and continues to do so, with Seeds of Hope, Laundry Love and other emergent expressions, Bruno said during a Dec. 5 convention address to more than 700 lay and clergy delegates, visitors and guests at the Ontario Convention Center.
"What does it mean to invest in ministry that will continue with vitality into the future? How is such investment different than continuing to pour resources into old patterns and systems that are no longer viable?" Bruno asked during an address that included presentations by Bishops Suffragan Diane Jardine Bruce on stewardship, and Mary Douglas Glasspool about interfaith and ecumenical partnerships.
Bruno also announced plans to retire in 2018, and called for the 2016 election of a bishop coadjutor (see Bruno's letter to the diocese here). A search committee, to be led by the Rev. Canon Julian Bull, Campbell Hall headmaster, will be named in January 2015, Bruno said. A list of officers elected at convention is here; results of votes on resolutions are here.
The Winter 2015 issue of The Episcopal News, to be published online early this week at www.episcopalnews.com, will include complete convention news.

Winter in Jerusalem: Can there be peace? by Malcolm Boyd In the winter of 1972 I was invited to live as a guest of Mishkenot Sha'ananin in the legendary city of Jerusalem. It proved to be a rare opportunity to engage in a dialogue with Israeli and Palestinian writers and artists involved in a search for peace. "It is tragic that, in effect, Arabs and Jews are in the Alamo now killing each other," was an oft-heard remark.
