Program at St. Alban's, Westwood, to feature new book on Watts Towers
As part of its "Faith & Reason" series of lectures, St. Alban's Episcopal Church, Westwood (Los Angeles) will present a discussion of the Watts Towers, centered on the newly published book Sabato Rodia's Towers in Watts: Art, Migrations, Development on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 4 p.m. The book (NY: Fordham University Press, 2014) presents the extraordinary Watts Towers, a national historic landmark created over three decades by Italian immigrant laborer Sabato Rodia, who wanted to "do something big." Gathering bits of glass, tile, shells, along streets, beaches, and railroad tracks, he pursued his magnificent obsession, turning trash into treasure. The volume also tells of the Watts Towers Common Ground Initiative, whereby scholars, artists, civic authorities, conservators, and others - voices not always in harmony - have come together to create common cause around the monument. These new voices, as well as Rodia's own words (transcribed from sound recordings at UCLA Research Library's Special Collections for the first time), return us to the mysteries that remain around the man and his artwork: What are they? Why did he build them? Why is a new generation rallying around this L.A. icon? Luisa Del Giudice, editor, coordinator of the initiative, and St. Alban's parishioner, will share a slide-illustrated book presentation and discuss future plans for the landmark. A book signing and reception will follow the presentation. St. Alban's Church is located at 580 Hilgard Avenue, Los Angeles. More information is here.
