Church of England votes
final approval of women bishops

[Anglican Communion News Service] The General Synod of the Church of England has enacted the final measure enabling women to be ordained as bishops. The formal enactment of the legislation on Nov. 17 followed the vote of approval by the synod at its meeting in July. Since that time the legislation has been approved in Parliament and received assent from Queen Elizabeth II. The final legislative requirements took place during a session chaired by Archbishop of York John Sentamu on the first day of the synod's meeting in London.

The motion was put without debate, with only a simple majority required for approval. After the vote, the archbishops of Canterbury and York signed the measure into law before the whole synod. "Today we can begin to embrace a new way of being the church and moving forward together," said Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. "We will also continue to seek the flourishing of the church of those who disagree."

Four bishop diocesan and five bishop suffragan positions are currently open in the Church of England.
