Convention youth volunteer
training set for Nov. 15
The Program Group on Youth and Young Adult Ministries invites young people in high school (grades 9 - 12) to volunteer as workers at Diocesan Convention. The youth fulfill a number of essential roles, including security at the doors, staffing the microphones, distributing and collecting ballots, and generally keeping the meeting running.

Generations of young people of the diocese have discovered the workings of the church by participating in the official youth presence at the annual meeting of Diocesan Convention. They meet bishops, clergy and lay leaders, work with young people from all over the diocese and learn how they can begin to take their own places in the wider church.

Young people who will take part in convention must attend a training meeting on Saturday, November 15, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Cathedral Center of St. Paul, 840 Echo Park Avenue, Los Angeles 90026. The training is mandatory for youth who are volunteering at convention. Transportation help is available for those living at a distance from the Cathedral Center.

A $75 charge for each youth volunteer helps to cover the cost of hotel rooms for Friday night and meals and snacks during the convention. Limited scholarship assistance is available. Youth volunteers will be supervised and chaperoned throughout the convention.

For complete information, instructions, rules about expected behavior and attire, and registration forms, click here.

For information, contact Shawn Evelyn, program group chair, at shawnevelyn@gmail.com or Chris Tumilty, diocesan youth ministry coordinator, at ctumilty@ladiocese.org or 213.482.2040, ext. 211.

St. Michael's, Isla Vista Episcopalians call for reduced gun violence
Episcopal congregations in Southern California and Washington DC will hold observances in November and December promoting the prevention of gun violence. St. Michael's University Church, Isla Vista, will host a "service of lament" at 5 p.m. today, Nov. 9, themed "Together in Sorrow," in memory of seven students who were killed in a shooting rampage May 23 near the University of California's Santa Barbara campus. The Rev. Julie Morris of St. Michael's will lead the service.

The National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. will hold a vigil against gun violence, "Together in Sorrow, Together in Action" on Dec. 11 to mark the second anniversary (on Dec. 14) of the death by gunfire of 20 children and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The observance will be held in conjunction with Newtown Action Alliance, a grassroots organization founded in the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy that seeks to reduce gun violence.

St. Luke's Church, Long Beach, will hold a service of lament on Sunday, Dec. 28, the Feast of the Holy Innocents, in cooperation with the diocesan Program Group on Peace & Justice Ministries. The program group, with Bishop Suffragan Mary Glasspool, has been working to follow up on the Episcopal Church's "Reclaiming the Gospel of Peace" conference held last April in Oklahoma City.

In a recent column in the Episcopal News Weekly bulletin insert, Bishop J. Jon Bruno urged congregations in the diocese to take part in these observances. "In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace," he wrote, "I encourage each of us to do all we can to remain proactive in discouraging violence in all forms and preventing further loss of lives precious to our God and to one another." The full column may be read here.
