Li Tim-Oi Center awarded grant for Asian ministries
Bishop Stacy Sauls, Episcopal Church Chief Operating Officer, has announced the awarding of a $150,000 grant devoted to Asian ministries to the Li Tim-Oi Center for Chinese Ministry in San Gabriel. The funding, to be distributed in increments of $50,000 annually, was approved by the Episcopal Church Executive Council at its October 2014 meeting.
The grant will be dedicated to building costs, program funding, staffing, and spiritual offerings at the center, located in the San Gabriel Valley in connection with the Church of Our Saviour.
The Li Tim-Oi Center will be "the nexus of Chinese ministry services: connecting people to needed social services; providing sacramental and pastoral care; supporting evangelism and seeker discovery; creating resources regarding Chinese ministry; and sustaining the ministry through a mission driven business enterprise," according to the grant proposal. Reflections on Brittany Maynard and the right to die Brittany Maynard, a 29-year-old Southern Californian and alumna of St. John's School, Rancho Santa Margarita, moved to Oregon this year to take advantage of its right-to-die law. Diagnosed on Jan. 1 with terminal brain cancer, Maynard announced that she would end her life once her symptoms, including seizures and searing headaches, become unbearable. She chose Saturday, Nov. 1, but reserved the right to delay her death depending on her illness's severity. By going public with her decision and associating her name and story with Compassion & Choices, a right-to-die advocacy group, Maynard has sparked a debate about doctor-assisted suicide as a last-ditch expedient for those who are hopelessly ill. The Rev. Canon John Taylor, vicar of St. John's Church and School has written a reflection on Maynard's situation from a pastoral point of view, discussing the theological, practical and emotional impact of her decision. Taylor's reflection may be read online here.
Activists to hold news conference in support of Brittany Maynard's decision
A news conference in support of more end-of-life options will be held by a coalition of elected officials and religious and community leaders at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, on the south lawn steps of Los Angeles City Hall, 200 N. Spring St., Los Angeles 90012. Participants will light a "Flame of Hope" in support of Brittany Maynard (see above). Speakers and participants, including Fabian Nuńez, former California State Assembly speaker, will sign a petition pledging their support for "death with dignity," stating, "We strongly feel that terminally ill, mentally competent adults should have the right to medication they can use to achieve a peaceful death." The event is sponsored by Compassion & Choices. More information is here.
