Civil discourse will be focus of churchwide forum on Oct. 22
On Oct. 22, the Episcopal Church will host and produce a live webcast forum on "Civil Discourse in America." The 90-minute live webcast will originate from historic Christ Church, Philadelphia (Diocese of Pennsylvania), the birthplace of the Episcopal Church and the home of the nation's beginnings. In partnership with the Diocese of Pennsylvania, the online forum will begin at 11 a.m. Pacific time here. The forum will be moderated by well-known journalist and commentator Paul Brandeis Raushenbush, executive religion editor for the Huffington Post. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori will present the keynote address.
Two panel discussions will focus on main themes: Civil discourse and faith; and Civil discourse in politics and policy. Panelists include:
- David Boardman, dean of the School of Media and Communication at Temple University
- Dr. John J. DeGioia, president of Georgetown University, Washington D.C.
- Rabbi Steve Gutow, president and CEO of the Jewish Council on Public Affairs
- Hugh Forrest, director of the South by Southwest Interactive Festival
- Dr. Carolyn J. Lukensmeyer, executive director of the National Institute on Civil Discourse
- Dr. Elizabeth McCloskey, president and CEO of The Faith & Politics Institute
- Bishop Prince Singh of the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester, N.Y.
Southland native is new bishop in Mississippi Brian Richard Seage was ordained and consecrated bishop coadjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi on Sept. 27 at a service at the Jackson Convention Complex. Seage was elected on May 3 at St. Andrew's Cathedral in Jackson, and received the required consents from a majority of bishops and standing committees of the Episcopal Church. He will succeed the Rt. Rev. Duncan M. Gray III as the 10th bishop of Mississippi when Gray retires in February 2015. Bishops throughout the Episcopal Church attended the ordination-consecration, including Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, who was the chief consecrator. Co-consecrators included Los Angeles Bishop J. Jon Bruno, who knew Seage from Bruno's years as a youth minister at St. Patrick's, Thousand Oaks. Seage was ordained a priest in Los Angeles in 1998 and then assisted at St. Patrick's.
L.A. Bach Festival begins new life at All Saints, Pasadena The Los Angeles Bach Festival, the oldest fine arts cultural event in Los Angeles, is reborn this year at All Saints Church, Pasadena, under the direction of James Walker, All Saints' music director and Bach Festival artistic director. The festival, founded in 1934, was previously held at the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles. Public concerts will be held on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. Read more here.
Students, young adults find 'Holy Ground' with Episcopal-Lutheran ministry "Holy Ground" is the new name of the Episcopal-Lutheran young adult and campus ministry in Long Beach, sponsored jointly by St. Luke's Episcopal Church and Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and led by the Rev. Sean Lanigan. In August, Holy Ground launched a Sunday evening worship service, featuring "relaxed liturgical worship with a contemporary beat," at 5 p.m. in the chapel at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, located at 370 Junipero Avenue in Long Beach. Holy Ground also continues to gather every Wednesday evening for study, formation, prayer, and fellowship. "We also plan to add additional gatherings and opportunities for community outreach in the near future, as we continue to grow," Lanigan said. "Holy Ground participants now come not only from Long Beach, but also from San Pedro, Downey, Huntington Beach, and Highland Park - please continue to help us spread the word!" Read more here.
Bishop's Guild marks 100th year The Bishop's Guild, which has aided the bishops of Los Angeles for a century, and has for many years offered financial and spiritual support to seminarians of the diocese, held its annual garden party in 102-degree weather on Oct. 4 at the Pasadena home of Bishop Jon and Mary Bruno. REQUIESCANT
The Rev. Canon George W. Cummings
March 25, 1927 - October 13, 2014
The Rev. Canon George William Cummings, former secretary of convention, executive director of The Episcopal Home (The Kensington) and rector of The Church of Our Saviour, San Gabriel, died Oct. 13. He was 87. Survivors include his four children, Karen, Richard, Jeffrey and Kalaine; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced as soon as they are finalized. Cummings became executive director of The Episcopal Home in Alhambra in 1972, after a year as assistant and eight years as rector of Church of Our Saviour. During his 29-year tenure at the Home (later renamed The Kensington), Cummings oversaw the development and construction of the Canterbury in Palos Verdes Estates, and the initial design of the Covington in Aliso Viejo. In 1984 he became an assistant secretary of convention, and in 1987 was elected secretary, a post he held until 2006. Full obituary here.
Lawrence "Larry" Bressler Denise Bressler d. October 13, 2014
Lawrence "Larry" Bressler, 50, director of operations at Chefs Center in Pasadena, and his wife Denise Bressler, 64, died Oct. 13 from stab wounds allegedly inflicted by a cousin to Larry, who had recently been staying with them. Chef's Center is a project of the Episcopal Housing Alliance and Economic Development. A Pasadena Star-News story about the assault is here. Chef's Center, located at 45 N. IRIS (Interfaith Refugee & Immigration Service), a program of the diocese, is participating in the L.A. Law Library's annual National Pro Bono Week October 20 - 25. Pro Bono Week showcases the great difference that free services make, and highlights the growing need for free and low cost legal aid for those facing civil legal problems that affect basic living conditions such as housing, government benefits, family safety and consumer debt. St. John's, La Verne, invites all to join 'Matt's Run' Saint John's Church, La Verne, invites runners and walkers from across the diocese to join them in Matt's Run on Saturday, Oct. 18, 8 a.m. at Cal Poly Pomona. Matt Myers (pictured), who was an active member of Saint John's, where his parents and sister are still members, died in 2005 while a student at Cal Poly when he was struck by a car while walking on campus. Taizé Worship Service
St. Francis Episcopal Church (chapel) 2200 Via Rosa, Palos Verdes Estates Information: 310.375.4617 A meditative Taizé service of healing and wholeness that includes candlelight, periods of silence, chants and intercessory prayer with a prayer team leader. Followed by a reception with light refreshments. Taizé is a calming and beautiful form of sung contemplative prayer developed in an ecumenical monastery in France. Taizé services are offered throughout the year on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Donations are welcome.

LAKE ARROWHEAD: Organist/Pianist. St. Richard of Chichester Episcopal Church seeks a skilled and experienced organist/pianist to accompany the congregation and small choir with hymns and service music for a 10 a.m. service of Holy Eucharist each Sunday. Organist will choose and perform preludes and postludes, and choose anthems for the choir when needed. Choir rehearses one hour before the service. St. Richard's desires to build its music program and choir; organist will be chiefly responsible for guiding this growth. Church has a two manual Rodgers organ (Cambridge Model 220), a grand piano, and excellent acoustics. Sundays and holy days only; compensation in line with AGO guidelines.
