It's time to think about Diocesan Convention, to be held Friday - Saturday, Dec. 5 - 6 at the Ontario Convention Center.

Prospective candidates for diocesan office will find a list of open offices here; a nomination form here; and instructions for submitting candidate information here.

Clergy and delegates, as well as alternate delegates, exhibitors, volunteers and visitors, will find about everything they need to know at the newly redesigned convention web page, found here. As the date for convention draws nearer, those planning to attend the meeting are encouraged to visit the page often for updated information, forms, candidate bios and photos, helpful documents and more.

Brass Rubbing Brass Rubbing Center to begin 28th return engagement at
St. Luke's, Long Beach

Life in the past lane returns to St. Luke's Episcopal Church in downtown Long Beach on Oct. 22 with the opening of the Brass Rubbing Medieval Arts Center, now in its 28th year.  The doors to "Castle Cassidy" swing wide in time to join the Hallowe'en season, the yearly fall spotlight on the departed. But instead of raising screams, visitors to St. Luke's can show off creations they make by choosing gold, silver or copper sticks of metallic wax, then  picking from more than 100 replica memorial markers. They tape paper over the top and vigorously stroke to coax images of those who lived out-sized lives in 14th -and 15th century England. Read more here.

Descanso St. George's, La Ca�ada, to begin 'Mindful Walking'
at Descanso Gardens

The Rev. Amy Pringle and the Rev. Anthony Keller of St. George's Church, La Ca�ada, on Tuesday, Oct. 21 will begin a weekly program titled "Mindful Walking" each Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at Descanso Gardens, located at 1418 Descanso Dr., La Ca�ada Flintridge 91011. Mindful Walking is designed to actively engage the body and the mind allowing for an allotment of time each week for physical spiritual engagement. Participants will pay their admission (or used their membership), then meet in front of the entrance, where they will be handed a reflection question and given 40 minutes to walk at their own pace to ponder the question or quote of the week. After the walk, those attending will be invited to share a beverage at the outdoor caf� to share what they have gleaned from their mindful walking experience.      Members of the Diocese of Los Angeles will walk in solidarity with the one in four Americans whose lives are affected by mental illness, sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Organizers invite the diocesan community to "join us in proclaiming God's love for all whose lives have been impacted by mental illness -- be it depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, OCD or other disorder." The walk will begin and end in Grand Park in downtown Los Angeles, beginning at 9:15 a.m. with a pre-walk program; the walk will start at 10 a.m. During the pre-walk portion the Episcopal team captain, the Rev. Katie Cadigan, will lead a moment of remembrance for those whose lives have been lost to mental illness. To sign up for the walk, click here and select the "Join My Team" button to register. Proceeds support mental health programs offered at no cost in the Greater Los Angeles area.

The Creation of a Sukkah in Observance of Sukkot

     An interfaith opportunity for children and families to learn about a Jewish harvest holiday. A sukkah is a temporary hut constructed for use during the week-long Jewish festival of Sukkot. It is topped with branches and often well decorated with autumnal, harvest or Judaic themes. The Book of Vayikra (Leviticus) describes it as a symbolic wilderness shelter, commemorating the time God provided for the Israelites in the wilderness they inhabited after they were freed from slavery in Egypt. Led by Rabbi Neil Comess-Daniels from Temple Beth Shir Shalom, the program offers an introduction to Sukkot for children and adults. Activities will include learning to wave the "lulav" (a palm frond, myrtle and willow branches, and a citron), an important ritual during Sukkot; and making decorations for the Sukkah with arts and crafts materials. Reservations are requested. The Guibord Center, based at the ProCathedral, works to increase understanding among Los Angeles' diverse religious communities.

Charleston, a citizen of the Choctaw Nation, has been a priest in reservation communities, the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Alaska, and a professor in three seminaries. He is internationally known as an advocate for the rights of indigenous people, for spiritual renewal and reconciliation, and for environmental justice. His thousands of followers on Facebook read his daily spiritual messages. The event is free and all are welcome. A reception and book-signing will follow.      Immigration reform advocate Jan Meslin of Friends of Orange County Detainees, which provides volunteer visitors to undocumented persons who are in Orange County jails, will lead a discussion after the screening. The title of this series of brief videos refers to the immigrant processing facility and detention center in San Francisco Bay, active from 1910 through 1940. This center has been preserved as a treasure-trove of the despondent poetry written on the walls by the tens of thousands of Chinese immigrants and residents who spent weeks and months there. For the screening, which will take place in Messiah's Upper Room, parking is available on the street or at the Hands Together Preschool across the street from the church. Light refreshments will be served.

St. Richard of Chichester Episcopal Church seeks a skilled and experienced organist/pianist to accompany the congregation and small choir with hymns and service music for a 10 a.m. service of Holy Eucharist each Sunday. Organist will choose and perform preludes and postludes, and choose anthems for the choir when needed.  Choir rehearses one hour before the service. St. Richard's desires to build its music program and choir; organist will be chiefly responsible for guiding this growth. Church has a two manual Rodgers organ (Cambridge Model 220), a grand piano, and excellent acoustics.  Sundays and holy days only; compensation in line with AGO guidelines. THOUSAND OAKS: Director of Youth and Family Ministries, St. Patrick's Episcopal Church. This new position will be based on 20 hours per week. The director will work with a team of parents and the rector to develop and carry out a program for middle- and high school-age youth in our congregation.
