Bishop's Guild Garden Party
Bishop's Guild invites all to mark
its centennial at Oct. 4 garden party

The Bishop's Guild of the Diocese of Los Angeles will celebrate its 100th year of ministry at its annual garden party on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2 - 4 p.m. at the Pasadena home of Bishop J. Jon Bruno and Mary Bruno. Artwork by children from Episcopal schools in the diocese will be on display for show and silent auction, and many seminarians will be present to meet and talk to.

The Bishop's Guild was launched in 1914 to carry out special projects on behalf of the first bishop of Los Angeles, the Rt. Rev. Joseph Horsfall Johnson. It continued to support the work of the bishop for many years, and gradually its ministry was focused on the financial and spiritual well-being of men - and later women - of the diocese who were preparing to enter the ministry.

The support of seminarians remains the Guild's ministry today. Through the annual garden party and other donations, the guild raises funds for seminarian scholarships and supports the students through prayer. When new deacons and priests are ordained, the guild often hosts the post-service reception.

Tickets to the garden party are $30; for reservations, contact Donna Keller, president, at dkeller68@yahoo.com or 951.545.4218. (For those unable to attend, donations to support the guild's work are appreciated.)

As part of the centennial celebration, the Bishop's Guild is looking for stories of its past, from clergy who were assisted by the scholarship program, or from congregations that assisted seminarians. To let the Bishop's Guild know about the experience, or for information about the organization, contact Keller at the email address or phone number listed above.

Saint Nicholas Episcopal Church in Encino
marks 75 years with bilingual Mass

ENCINO >> Corinne Elrod was a young teen when she started attending St. Nicholas of Myra Episcopal Church in the early 1960s. Back then, she said, parishioners were all "white bread" - largely of English, Irish and Swedish ancestry. She doesn't recall any tambourines in the music that reverberated within the walls of this Spanish Mission-style church. And one probably wouldn't have heard liturgy completely in Spanish. But during a bilingual Mass on Sunday commemorating the church's 75th anniversary, Elrod celebrated the congregation's growing diversity: tambourines and all. Read more here.

Two good places to pray:
the subway and the kitchen

By Malcolm Boyd

I cannot recall exactly when the idea of prayer began to change radically in my own life. Prayer, for me, used to stand as something separate from other parts of my life. But I have come to learn that real prayer is not so much talking to God as just sharing God's presence. I find I'm able to live in a kind of Christian nonchalance rooted in a trust of God that severs the old double-standard morality game I used to play with God. I can no longer conceive of lying to God in proper Old English or any other style of speech. I feel completely myself with God.
