Bishop Roskam at Dodger Stadium
Episcopalians cheer Dodgers
to victory over Diamondbacks

The 21st annual Episcopal Night at Dodger Stadium Sept. 5 was a success for all, including the Dodgers, who won the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Catherine Roskam (pictured above), bishop-in-charge of St. James' Church, Los Angeles, and retired bishop suffragan of the Diocese of New York, threw out the first pitch, proudly sporting a Brooklyn Dodgers jersey in honor of Jackie Robinson, whom she watched play many times at Ebbets Field. Bishop Suffragan Mary Glasspool and retired Bishop Fred Borsch and Barbara Borsch, along with many other Episcopalians, cheered her on. Greg Larkin, rector of St. Columba's, Camarillo, coordinated Episcopal Night, as he has since its inception. The evening ended with dazzling fireworks. More photos here.

Gaza hospital faces a future treating
severe injuries, trauma

[Anglican Communion News Service] The Anglican-run hospital in Gaza City which provided critical healthcare during the recent fighting is facing a future treating severe injuries and trauma. In a message to the Anglican Communion, Anglican Bishop in Jerusalem Suheil Dawani said serving the immediate needs of the community in Gaza "remained a high priority" for Al Ahli Arab Hospital and its staff. The bishop was writing primarily to thank the Anglican Communion for the "outpouring of support from our development partners, churches and individuals" after a humanitarian appeal for Al Ahli Hospital on July 15. Episcopal Church shield Restructuring task force issues letter to the Episcopal Church
The Taskforce for Reimagining The Episcopal Church (TREC) has issued "A Word To The Episcopal Church," outlining its suggestions for restructuring of church structures and governance processes. The 2012 meeting of General Convention unanimously voted for a complete assessment and "reimagining" of church structures, to be reported to the 2015 GC next summer in Salt Lake City. TREC, representing all areas of the church, was formed as a result. The letter -- as well as a lively exchange of comments from church members and observers -- may be read on the Episcopal News Service website here.

Impossible as it may seem, it's time to think about Diocesan Convention, to be held Friday - Saturday, Dec. 5 - 6 at the Ontario Convention Center.

Of particular interest this week: The deadline for submitting resolutions for consideration at convention is September 26. A submission form is here.

Clergy and delegates, as well as alternate delegates, exhibitors, volunteers and visitors, will find about everything they need to know at the newly redesigned convention web page, found here. As the date for convention draws nearer, those planning to attend the meeting are encouraged to visit the page often for updated information, forms, candidate bios and photos, helpful documents and more.

Neil Tadken Neil Tadken to serve as rector
of St. Luke's, Monrovia

The Rev. Neil Tadken has been called as rector of St. Luke's Church, Monrovia, where he had been serving as priest-in-charge. A celebration of a new ministry will be held on Sunday, October 19 at St. Luke's; time to be announced. Tadken, an actor before entering the ordained ministry, earned a bachelor's degree at Occidental College and a master of fine arts in acting at Cornell University. He appeared in the ABC programs "General Hospital" and "Port Charles," and acted in plays at the Old Globe Theater in San Diego. He was a founding member of the Basic Theater Company in NYC. He also founded daytime television's "Day of Compassion" for persons living with HIV/AIDS, which continued from 1993 to 2001. Tadken earned his master of divinity degree at the Claremont School of Theology. He previously served at St. James' Church, Los Angeles.

Aimee Eyer-Delevett All Saints', Santa Barbara,
calls 8th rector

All Saints-by-the-Sea in Santa Barbara has announced that the Rev. Aimee Eye-Delevett has accepted its call to serve as the eighth rector in its 114-year history. Eye-Delevett comes to All Saints from the Church of the Holy Nativity in the Chicago suburb of Clarendon Hills, where she has served as rector for the past eight years. According to a release from All Saints', "Aimee is passionate about creating vibrant communities of welcome, relevance and nurture for all people, and her priesthood is marked by leading congregations and individuals to discover how God is calling them to use their lives and gives for ministry. All Saints is looking forward to welcoming Aimee, her wife Alyson, and their daughter Willa to their new parish home Dec. 7."

[REDLANDS] Got music? A carnival of instruments made its way to Trinity Episcopal Church on Saturday to the delight of both children and adults. "I want to play some more," shouted Quinn Regalado, 3, of Highland as she made her way through one of the stations around the church, this station filled with string instruments. Read more here.

Dina Fulgoni St. Columba's, Big Bear Lake, to offer forum on 'Coping With Loss'
"Coping With Loss"  will be the topic of a forum on Saturday, October 4, beginning at 10 a.m. at St Columba's Church, Big Bear Lake. Three presenters will deal with all kinds of loss from the small to the great, ranging from the end of a good day to the loss of a spouse. Dr. Cary Stewart, administrator at Bear Valley Hospice, will begin the presentation part of the day with his view as a doctor and hospice administrator. Dina Fulgoni (pictured top right), a seminarian from St. Columba's, will continue the day with a perspective Benedict Reid based on her life experience and seminary study. The Rev. Benedict Reid (pictured at right) will close the morning's presentations with his perspective as a monk and retired abbot with an exploration of the inner part of losing something precious. After a lunch break, participants will break into smaller groups to explore questions and feelings on a more personal level. The forum and lunch are free, but reservations are requested: call 909.866.7239.  Attendance may have to be limited, so reserve early. Laundry Love wagon Laundry Love Pomona invites volunteers to
Sept. 24 session

St. Mark's Church, Upland, will sponsor the next session of Laundry Love Pomona, on Wednesday, Sept. 24, beginning with volunteer training at 5:30 p.m. Clients will be invited to load their laundry into washers from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Grove Laundromat, 3147 North Garey Avenue, Pomona 91767. Laundry Love Pomona (LLP) was started in July by St. Ambrose's Church, Claremont, and St. John's Church, La Verne, led by Jullie McCurdy and Kathy Winsor, with the help from Laundry Love Huntington Beach founders Stephen Bruce and Christian Kassoff. In August, St. Mark's and Saint Paul's Church, Pomona, joined the team. Volunteers from sponsoring churches supply soap, fabric softener sheets, quarters to run the machines, and conversation and fellowship with the clients, who receive the service at no charge. Volunteers from any congregation are welcome to participate on the fourth Wednesday of each month (in November, the third Wednesday). For information, visit Laundry Love Pomona on Facebook.

Grits and Grady bluegrass group Join St. Richard's, Lake Arrowhead, for 'Bluegrass, BBQ and Bingo' Sept. 27
St. Richard of Chichester Episcopal Church, Lake Arrowhead, will hold a "Bluegrass, BBQ and Bingo" fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 27, 4 - 7 p.m., featuring music by "Grits and Grady," a lively Green Vally Bluegrass group. Barbecued pulled pork and chicken sandwiches, along with vegetarian sandwiches and beverages will be available for sale. The event will also feature St. Richard's first-ever chili cook-off, with the chance to vote for a "People's Choice" award. Silent and live auctions will take place during the event. Woodworth Vineyards of Temecula, California, will present its award-winning wines for tasting and sale. Children can enjoy free crafts and carnival games while the adults enjoy bingo. Bishop Robert Gooden The Gooden School to
honor namesake bishop
at Sept. 18 celebration

The Gooden School, an independent Episcopal school in Sierra Madre, will honor its namesake, the Rt. Rev. Robert Burton Gooden, with a special chapel service on his birthday, Sept. 18, 8 - 9 a.m. The service is "one of many ways we keep his legacy alive for our students," says Patty Patano, head of school.  Bishop Gooden (pictured at left) was born in England on Sept. 18, 1874, and began his ministry in Ventura in 1904. Although he retired in 1947 as bishop suffragan of Los Angeles, he remained active in the diocese until his death at 101. A lifelong proponent of education, he proudly attended the opening of The Gooden School in 1975. All are invited to the service, to be held at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 25 East Laurel Avenue, Sierra Madre (across the street from The Gooden School, which is located at 192 N. Baldwin Avenue.)  Street parking is available.

Gooden Center bike ride October 'Ride 4 Recovery' will raise funds for Gooden Center
The Gooden Center of Pasadena will hold its second annual Ride 4 Recovery on Oct. 25.  This century cycling event -- a 100-mile ride -- will raise funds for the work of the Center, which has since 1962 helped more than 7,500 men and their families deal with the challenges of alcohol and drug dependency. This year the cycling event will be renamed the Richard Selje Ride 4 Recovery in honor of a retired Pasadena architect, avid cyclist and sponsor to many men in recovery.  A dinner in Seije's honor will be held Friday evening, Oct. 24 at the Valley Hunt Club.  For information call Susan Johnson at 626.356.0078, ext. 204. The Stern Lecture: 'The Mystery of the Cross'

Guy Erwin, bishop of the Southwest Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will speak on the theology of the cross, which has evolved from Christianity's earliest days "from a symbol of shame ... to an example of the most profound human feeling in the Church of the medieval era; from a theologian's theory of atonement to the modern era's search for meaning in the face of suffering and death." The first installment of the lecture, "The Scandal of The Cross," will be Friday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. The lecture will continue on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 9 a.m. with "The Suffering of the Cross," "The Glory of the Cross," "The Folly of the Cross" and "On Being A Theologian Of The Cross." Saturday's presentation will include a luncheon on the parish courtyard. honored on World AIDS Day

Kirk Thompson died of AIDS in 1996. His brother, Mark, is my partner of more than thirty years. I remember a summer day when five of us rode horseback to scatter Kirk's ashes in the Upper Carmel Valley of northern California.
