Elinor Gaines
Elinor Brenton Gaines, widow of the Rev. Donald Gaines, died Aug. 29 at her home in Long Beach. She was 85, and had been in poor health since a stroke some 15 years ago. A service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12 at the ProCathedral of St. John in Los Angeles. Survivors include the Gaines' son, Bill Gaines; daughters Mary Gaines and Margaret Muhlenkamp; and six grandchildren.

According to Mary Gaines, Elinor Gaines was "a great clergy wife" who shared her husband's ministry at many churches in the diocese, including St. Timothy's, Compton; St. John's, Wilmington; St. John's, San Bernardino; St. John's, La Jolla; the Navy Chapel in Long Beach (now closed) and St. John's, Los Angeles (now the ProCathedral), where Elinor also edited the parish newsletter for 10 years. Donald Gaines died in 2008.

Every month, Mitchell would trek to a local laundromat and take advantage of Laundry Love, a growing faith-driven movement that helps those who are homeless or financially struggling by washing their dirty clothes for free.

PASADENA - In light of recent controversial police shootings of unarmed black men both in Southern California and across the nation, more than 100 people marched in Pasadena late Thursday to call for peace, solidarity and improved relations between police and communities at a rally organized by two young Pasadena women. [The Rev. Francisco Garcia of All Saints Episcopal Church -- located across the street from Pasadena City Hall -- led prayers at the rally, and many All Saints parishioners were among those attending.]

St. Paul's to celebrate 125th anniversary in Ventura

St. Paul's Episcopal Church will celebrate its 125th year of service to the Ventura community on Sunday, Sept. 14 with a variety of events. The church, located at 3290 Loma Vista Road, across from the Ventura County Medical Center, invites past parishioners, current and present day teachers from La Familiga Preschool, alumni and others who may have participated in the community programs hosted at St. Paul's over the years, including Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to join in the celebration, which will include a barbecue lunch beginning at 11:30 a.m. Tours of the campus will be offered beginning at 12:30 p.m. to highlight the parish's many ministries, including the preschool, the Spooner Art Studio, congregational garden and the church's connection to The Abundant Table and Join the Farm. Visitors will also have an opportunity to view St. Paul's labyrinth, and to learn about prayer, study and service opportunities. Digital and pop-up displays will showcase the church's history, including the organ, recently refurbished by Manuel Rosales, curator of the organ at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. 'Enchanted Evening' planned in Claremont
St. Ambrose Church, Claremont, will hold its annual "Enchanted Evening" dinner and dance on Saturday, Oct. 4, 5:30 - 10 p.m. at the church, located at 830 W. Bonita Avenue in Claremont.  The evening will begin with hors d'oeuvres and continues with the live sounds of the Orange County Swing Band, a buffet dinner, luscious libations, decadent desserts, opportunity drawings, silent auction and open dancing in the Starlite Room. Profits from the evening benefit the ongoing ministries of St. Ambrose as well as two local outreach organizations. Tickets are $60 per person or $430.00 for a reserved stage-side table of eight (8). Kirk Thompson died of AIDS in 1996. His brother, Mark, is my partner of more than thirty years. I remember a summer day when five of us rode horseback to scatter Kirk's ashes in the Upper Carmel Valley of northern California.
