Bishop Guy Erwin Bishop Guy Erwin to speak on 'Mystery of the Cross' at St. Matthew's
"The Mystery Of The Cross" will be the topic of the 2014 Stern Lecture to be delivered by Lutheran Bishop R. Guy Erwin Friday - Sunday, Sept. 12 - 14 at Saint Matthew's Episcopal Church, Pacific Palisades. Erwin, bishop of the Southwest Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will speak on the theology of the cross, which has evolved from Christianity's earliest days "from a symbol of shame ... to an example of the most profound human feeling in the Church of the medieval era; from a theologian's theory of atonement to the modern era's search for meaning in the face of suffering and death. Scripture, theology, preaching, art, poetry, and music have all contributed a rich and varied sweep of meaning to this puzzling, terrifying, yet glorious story of passion, death, and new life."
